Cheap way to measure the ambient temperature in my room?

That's the way I have done it for years. Works great! You can even get free ones with advertising on them. 🙂 Get two and mount one outside by a window and you can check inside and outside temps.

 
just get a cheap one from home depot with those nice big numbers, beats reading the tiny numbers on a thermometer. It's also safer to work with
