Cheap way to adapt NVME m.2 pcie to USB? (intel 600p)

I have an intel 600p NVME m.2 2280 M-key PCI-E SSD where either the drive died or the motherboard connector / controller failed, I don't know which yet.

I'd like to have an adapter of some kind to read it, but the ones I've found are all PCI-E x4 cards. I'm fine with even USB 2.0 read/write speeds, so a USB adapter of some kind would be ideal. I suppose I could stick it in a PC that has no dedicated video card, but that'd more of a pain.

Sadly no, since the intel 600p is M-keyed PCI-E x4: "Supports SATA B keyed, B+M keyed M.2 NGFF SSDs. However, it does Not Support M keyed nor PCIe devices. Please Check your M.2 SSD type first for compatibility."

I looked through a couple of pages of enclosures on Amazon and they were all for SATA NVMEs not PCI-E.

Sigh, it looks like I'll need to get a PCI-E x4 card adapter and stick it in a video card slot. I didn't find any PCI-E x1 cards either. (Unless I've missed that PCI x4 cards can run in an x1 slot. I've never had a reason to use an x1 slot before.)

^ It says in description, does not support PCIE devices. It is for sata only.

A PCIe X4 will work in a PCIe x1, so long as the end is open and not blocking the card. Performance will be lower of course.
