Hi all,

Looking to upgrade the following system: P4 2.53, 512 ram, souldblaster live sound card....and the kicker......a 200 Watt power supply!!! LOL. HP Pavilion 763n....heheh need I say more??

Anyway, I probably could eventually upgrade the PS, but does it make sense to on such an ageing system??? My real question is this: should I upgrade with a 9600 Pro, 9600xt, or a 420 Watt power supply and a Radeon 9800??? Would the 9800 be overkill for my processor ???

thanks alot,

Chappie

live with what oyu have until you get a new system

imo any 9600 over 80 bucks aint worth it.... mayeb 100 if its an XT, but the 9800 isnt really worth it as its old as a mof.... but still the best option considering what a 9600 costs... a 420 psu would be useful in the next system....

I've got a Radeon 9700 Pro for sale in my sig link but I don't know if it'll fit in your case - it's got a 2-slot Zalman passive heatsink on it :D

Thanks for the replies guys,

But can anyone address the issue??? Is a 9800 overkill for a P4 2.53?? Would a 9600xt, or pro be a better match?

thanks,

I don't think 9800 is an overkill for your system, I think it should be about right, even if there will be a little bottlenecking, you probably won't really suffer from that.

Another thing, I used to have a radeon 9100, it is a very good card, I upgraded to 6600GT, I don't know what are your planes, but upgrading for anything less, will be for a very short term. So you should consider saving up, and maybe getting somthing better in 6 months or so, when 6600GT's price will hit the floor, as next gen cards are out.

narcotic,

thanks for the reply...well here's the deal...I need to make this system last for another year or so. I don't play the latest and greatest (i.e. Doom3, Far cry..etc...) I mostly play simulations...like GTR and Pacific Fighters...probably rfactor when it's released... so anything I do now will be a long term..hmm I might of answered my question right there..

I noticed your sig. are you a teacher??? LOL

thanks,

well if you want your system to last for another year, then a 9800 might do the trick. I don't think it'll last you much longer than that, but if that's the time you need it for (1 year), then you might as well get it.

and no, I'm not a teacher...

I agree, a 9800 Pro is what you want. And don't worry about bottlenecking, I had an x800 pro with a p4 2.4ghz 533 fsb for a while, and everything ran well.

a used 9800 is significantly cheaper than a 6600gt and he probably won't see the difference, not sure about the PSU
