Cheap upgrade to core 2 duo from Amd

Need to gather some thoughts on how to transfer from an AMD system with a nvidia 7800gt to a core 2 duo system.
Hopefully will get the 6300, or 6400 and overclock. I am searching for a mobo that is a good price and can o.c. well, and one stick of 1gb ddr2 ram. With another gb coming later when prices drop...
Hopefully I could get all of these things for around $400-500. I know there are better chips and boards but the budget is tight because I am a student so a lower cost is a must.

No offense, but you're not going to get a good result on the price/performance scale if you're already on a S939 AMD-based system. You'd be better off to buy a faster S939 processor. I know C2Ds are faster than 2.6GHz-ish X2s, but you're not going to get double+ the performance, but you'll be paying double+ the price easy.

There are absolutely times to jump ship. Being on a relatively modern platform, especially when you're on a budget, just isn't one of those times.

I currently have a single core AMD 3500 and the MSI Neo 4 Platinum SLI mobo and was looking at an opteron 165, but what kind of improvement would I get?
The chip I was looking at was $155. I also was wary of continuing to upgrade on socket 939, as I don't know how long chips for this popular platform will last.

Well, from a quick Google search, you're 3500+ is a 2.2GHz 90nm chip. First, have you tried overclocking it? You might be able to hit a similar OC to what you'd expect from an Opty 165 (2.6-2.7GHz range).

Are you doing anything that you'd benefit from the second core? If so get the 165. If not, try to OC what you've got and stay where you're at until the next wave of procs hits. Even if you got a great OC out of a 6400 C2D, you still wouldn't see a huge benefit vs. your 3500+.

I'm not sure why you're wary of upgrading your S939 platform - it's not like it's going to get more expensive down the road to transition to C2D versus what it would cost you today. If it were me, I'd be trying to stretch your current platform out as long as possible since you have to replace so many parts to transition to the new one.

What are you doing that makes you want to overclock? Your 3500+ is already fast enough at stock speed for the 7800GT.

You're better off saving up for a full upgrade this summer.

Overclock your AMD 3500 and buy a 8800gts. Wait a year sell you system and buy a quad core cpu, motherboard and memory, then sell the 8800gts and get a 8800gtx cheap.
