Got my new TV setup and it needs some bass. Went to the store, though, and them subwoofers are $300? Crazy. My Altec Lansing ACS48's sub is good enough, so I know they're robbing me.

Help!

I've been chatting with some folks on a Home Theater forum, and they suggest the following:

Sony SA-WM40 12" 120W ~$140 on sale...

What kind of quality sound are you looking for Fun Guy?

Might be pretty cheap just to pick up another ACS set, like another ACS48 set? :) and the appropriate adapters to hook it up to your TV.

They aren't robbing you. The truth is, your ACS48 sub, while sufficient for basic PC duties, pretty much sucks for any kind of HT duty. Real subs cost money to design and manufactur, even DIY ones, which are commonly cheaper. The Sony WA-WM40 is the a very decent sub for its price, outperforming others in its price range and definitely outperforming the ACS48, and it's probably the cheapest sub I'd ever recommend to anybody.

Listen to a 12" sub and you'll know that an 8" sub is insufficient. Pay the extra money.

Robbing you? Why don't you tell that to someone who spends 2 grand on a sub and gets incredible hard-hitting yet smooth bass. If you think your ACS48 sub can compare to a $300 sub in anyway you are sadly mistaken and I feel sorry for you when you consider that good audio :(

And how exactly will you hookup this sub? You need a receiver, but that's not going to do much good unless you have some speakers to go with it as well.

Okay, thanks a lot guys. I'll try to find the Sony WA-WM40 somewhere near me (unless someone ships to New York). On the Best Buy site the Sony is $199 so I don't know where the sale is...

I've heard Acoustic Research subs before, and wasn't impressed. However, if you're on a budget, and all you need are boom boom sounds for your movies, then I guess just about any HT sub with at least 100W of power will do. The Sony unit mentioned above should handily outperform it though.
