Cheap SSD for fast random reads/writes

Hi there,

I'm a music producer and have just built a new PC, for the OS I'm using a 80gig Intel X-25M g2 and it's perfect. The system is extremely stable and incredibly fast. However I find that because I've become accustomed to how quickly I access the SSD versus accessing my sample library on the magnetic disk.

I don't need something as fast or expensive as the Intel, and only about 64gigs~ in size (for now). However I do want fast random reads and writes, sequential isn't a big deal as I'm working with small 1mb to 2mb samples most of the time and would like to instantly access them instead of the 20~ms as I scroll my list.

Trim is important as I'll continue to add sample packs I purchase and those which I create myself.

I'm thinking my only option for price is the Kingston SSD NOW V+Series 64GB SSD?

Thoughts?

Basically there are 2 options for fast read/write, Intel or Indilinx based SSDs

The drive you linked is based on the Samsung controller, you will be disappointed coming from a X-25M.

Except I'm not booting into an OS, it will be accessing small files 90% of the time. Think it's worth it?

Oh sorry I posted the wrong link, Price is about $270 for the 64gig based on this press release by Kingston and various tech sites.

fast random read/write is fast random read/write, whether done by the OS or done by the application. Maybe i'm missing something here.

Haha true, I guess I'm comparing real world usage to benchmarks. Bah I'll suck it up and get another Intel. My sample library is only about 30gigs in size right now but it'll be nice to have the space plus I could also store all of my project files for fast reads.

Guess I just needed that second opinion

It all depends on what controller that new Kingston drive is missing. The older SSDNow V+ uses the Samsung controller. It seems like from the press release that it's a newer SSDNow V+ with a new model number, SNVP325-S2. Anyone know what controller this uses?

No news yet, but the press release looks good... on paper. Hence my question. It's slightly cheaper, although smaller, but supports Trim.

Since I don't think there was a 64GB SNV225-S2 V+, I think that review is the newer SNVP325-S2 V+ drive. If so, the random write speed is disappointing at 3.25MB/s

How about an OCZ Solid 2? The original Solid was based on the rightfully much maligned Jmicron controller. The "2" uses an Indilinx controller. It is probably the slowest Indilinx based drive, however it is also the cheapest and likely will still be better than any current non-Intel/Indilinx SSD (though better ones are around the corner). The 60GB model is $170 at Newegg. That's without resorting to rebates or anything.

That's a good idea, I was hoping to pick a drive up this Friday so hopefully a store here in Toronto gets some in stock. 60gig would be the perfect amount of space for about a year or two.

And if nothing is in stock I'll just get another Intel 80gigger.
