cheap sound card for win7 64-bit?

VirtualLarry

No Lifer
need some recs. nothing expensive (over $20).

Edit: Via chipset mobo sound may be on the way out on my friend's mobo. He is having trouble with sound cutting out on things.

Basically, just want something that works, for a 2.1 speaker set.

Doesn't the computer have something built in? Most motherboards I've seen in the past have always had some type of sound.

I think the market is tending to split, between built in sound (havent seen a mobo in years that doesn't include this) and high end cards for people who are serious about sound.

what motherboard does he have?

If you're getting sound out of the speakers, the problem probably lies in drivers.

try this: http://www.asio4all.com/

the stock sound drivers are notoriously bad for latency, which might be the cause of your friend's sound troubles, depending on what he's doing.

Both PCI and external sound cards are usually only required for home recording studios or audiophiles with appropriate speakers/ room acoustics.

Have you considered a USB DAC/amp combo? Other than, all I can say is go for something from a fairly well established company, like this $20 Sound Blaster Audigy.

Too bad the Chaintech AV710 is not sold anymore.

I still have one or two in the garage. :awe: Loved those cards!

I seem to collect unused sound cards. :| Got an Audigy (or was it Audigy 2), some fancy Auzentech, a couple of 2 channel USB cards, the Chaintech cards and even a Turtle Beach. That's not including a few ISA sound cards I still have, such as my SoundBlaster AWE32 Gold. :whiste:
