Cheap, small and light computer for LAN parties

I want to build a computer that's small, light and inexpensive for LAN parties. Would any of the barebones machines here barebones be any good, or are there any chipsets that I should avoid. I don't carry about AMD or Intel, I just want to try to make as inexpensive as possible, yet maintain decent performance. Video card will probably be an 8800GTS.

Thanks

thanks for the suggestion, but it seems like I was a little premature. My car, which I only had for about a month, got dinged. Its nothing major, but the money that was going to the build now has to go to some minor car work. 🙁 That, and I just decided that an HDTV is more important than playing computer games. I guess I'm going to have to try to push my x1600 a little longer.

Save up your money and wait 2 months for the Christmas sales to buy your HDTV. Last year there were some killer deals to be had such as a 42" LCD for $699 after rebate.

Wow! Really?

I have a 42" Sony LCD. Love it! Already went through a lamp... 😀

However, it cost me $2500, and that was with an employee discount!

What kind of 42" HDTV do you get for 700 bones?!?!?!

I think it was a 720p Vizio, though other brands were only $100-200 more. This particular deal was at Micro Center for Black Friday.

I'm thinking by this Christmas 1080p 42" LCDs will be under $1000 en mass. Heck, even the REGULAR PRICE of the latest model version of the Westinghouse 1080p 42" is $1199 at Best Buy these days.

Here's some of my recommendations for buying around Christmas... any HDTV and low end notebooks.

Also, I predict RAM will probably bottom out in November at $50 for 2GB without rebates. We'll see if I'm right. 😉

For fwtong, though your plans have changed, I just want you to know that it is indeed possible to build a cheap, small and light computer for taking to LAN parties.

picture of two that I've built

One on left is an Ultra MicroFly case, aluminum, with dual 7900GTO in SLI, dual 250GB SATA HDD in RAID and an Athlon FX CPU. One on right is a highly overclocked Athlon 64 4000+ with a single 7900GTO. It weighs around 15 pounds and measures 13.5"x14.5"x5.5" and cost me around $700-800. I still use it to this day for going to LAN parties every weekend.
