Well I've been looking over my bills to see where I'm over spending. One area is definitely my Comcast service with Internet and voice. I plan on dropping to just internet only and purchasing a modem. This will save me $50 a month if not a bit more. What I'm trying to figure out is what would be a good SIP or VoIP provider. I don't need a ton of minutes as I don't talk on the phone too much. At most I use maybe 100 minutes a month. I would like to have 911 service if possible but not required. I'd also like to purchase from Amazon as I have some giftcards. So what would you folks recommend?

Personally I'd just go to T-Mobile, and buy a pre paid plan. For $100, you can get 1000 minutes. The minutes last until you use them and they carry over month to month. That should be roughly equal to $10/month for the cell phone at your usage. It's also $50 more for the standard non smart flip phone.

I'm happily using the OBi100 and Google Voice (GV). GV support was going away but that has been worked out. My monthly costs are zero. The OBi100 is $40 on Amazon. It's pretty basic, but it's all I need.

voip.ms is very inexpensive. You can buy a Linksys PAP2T pretty cheap to get connected.

I hate how much cable Internet, TV, phone, etc all cost these days. I feel like the prices should be going down instead of going up....but they always seem to go up.

I've not had good experience with free SIP connections. Typically, they are short lived and require a lot of work to find a new free way to make it work. I had 2 way calling with Google Voice and a few sip proxies 3 years ago, but never utilized it much because I just don't talk on the phone that much. If you don't care to go DSL for slower rate and are looking to cut budget, you could switch to a real landline + cheap DSL and probably save $30 a month.

That will likely be what I resort to unless I get talked into going back to Charter. I dropped them and am just sharing my 4G connection from Verizon...saving $60/month doing that. I'm only awake at home 4-5 hours a day and don't have time to play online due to family...it didn't make sense to keep it.

Google voice, that all you need, you can call from you computer, its 100% free and 1 cents / minute for international. If you need physical phone then get Obihai which works with Google voice

Voip - ooma. The only thing you pay is taxes. Last I checked, $3 a month, unlimited local and long distance. They have excellent service and uptime. I also agree - port your number to google voice first ($20) and then have it ring your ooma line and whatever else you want.
