what's the difference between a cheap router and an expensive one? does the costly router preform better than the cheaper one? I brought my D-link router over 2 years ago for $20 after rebate and this thing constantly disconnects. Im pretty sure it's not my internet provider.

all i wanted to know is will a $60 router solve the disconnecting problem?

you've put up with the d-link disconnects for 2 years? I also bought a cheap-a$$ d-link for one of those rebate scams and that thing was a total piece of crap. I have speedstream and a linksys, they have been awesome; my dsl modem locks up more than these, which is about twice a year.

well..yeah. sometimes the amout of disconnects varys from month to months, sometimes i dont get any discs at all and sometime i get like 2-3 times per month. well..all this time i didn't know what's causing the disconnecting, it might be the cable heads since it doesnt click when i plug it in the network card, it very loosen. but i'm pretty sure its the cheap 20 dollar d-link router. I'm thinking of migrating to wireless since these cables heads are very loosen when plug into the network card. but then im abit skeptical about other people, neighbors messing with my network with a laptop outside my house.

Depends. If it's a line/carrier problem then the most expensive router in the world won't solve the problem. How do you know there isn't a problem with the line, the signal strength, or the service from them?

In a very general way Entry Level Network Hardware can is divided into two Major Groups.

1. Bellow $100

2. Above $100.

Almost all Brands sell in both Categories.

The above $100 cost more Not because of better quality but because they might have few additional capacities that the sun $100 do not have. Like Better VPN, better Controlled Firewall, Giga ports, etc.

The bellow $100 group maintains in general similar pricing structure but they can be divided into two sub groups.

Steady Price like Buffalo Tech. and Linksys and SMC, and the frequently heavily discount. Like D-Link Netgear and others.

IMHO the Wireless Stuff of Buffalo Tech. is currently the preferred choice, very stable, and WDS out of the Box.

Linksys WRT54 is Not WDS out of the Box, but a good Choice if you want the Hack it with 3dr Party Firmware.

SMC has a good selection of Wired hardware, and Switches, including Giga but it is Not so Hot on the Wireless.

So in away you might say that depending on what type of Hardware you need the None heavily Discounted group might offer better choices.

because on my dsl modem there's 4 lights, power, dsl , act and enet. the act and enet blinks constantly means it's normal because there are traffic transfering from my pc to the router, and DSL light nevert blinks indicates that my line is solid strong. I pretty it's my router that's causing the problem since everytime i got disconnected the WAN light on my router shuts off completely.
