That means I can really only order from one site, because my parents have no credit cards and one check and its fees would be better than a bunch. Basically, I can order from newegg. I'm looking for a little gaming on older games (2003-2004), and possibly some overclocking. I will also be running Linux, so the OS is negligible and kind of invalidates buying a pre-built with Windows. As well, I can't upgrade much (I've been running this 1.2 gHz Duron since 2003.) I don't need a huge HD, by any stretch. I've used 3 GB on my 20 GB HD here.. lol. So, here are the specs for my rig going under $500. Monitor would be a later addition. By the way, since I can't upgrade much, kind of worthless to get something because of its "upgradeability." So yes, this rig would be Socket 754.

Considering I'm running a 1.2 gHz Duron with a 20 GB HD, 512 RAM, 16 MB integrated graphics, Windows 98 and a dying power supply, I'd say it'd be a huge step up. By the way, I paid $400 for this piece of junk. What do you think?

Edit: Spelling error.

You can do better on mobo choice and PSU. See the AT mobo section and PSU threads.

Not a bad card in the least, but I had heard something about ATI being poor for Linux?

My LL AMD 64 Linux rig has a ATI 9700 Pro ATI Radeon card and it works great.

I wouldn't personally choose a mobo w/ onboard vid of nvidia and then put an ati vid card in it. and if I did I wouldn't expect to yield any OCability.
As you said your options are limited w/ funds and w/ the egg's choices.
My friend has a new Gateway with onboard 6100 graphics and he can play all the 2003 2004 games and they look great.
I'd save some money and try out the 6100 for a while I bet you wouldn't be dissappointed
Maybe an Asus mobo tho- they just seem to make some of the best IMHO.

I have an Nvidia motherboard and I have an ATI card and it works just fine. Although, I agree on getting an Asus motherboard.
