My friend and I were playing Auto Modellista today, and racing the remote controlled cars. We thought that we should do the same, just for fun. But what are some cheap good RC cars that you can race and you won't get interference between them due to identical frequencies? Anyone know of where we can buy some?

Oh, GranTourismo > Auto Modellista. :p

Well, you can go the suggested Toys R Us route, but those cars are lackluster at best. If you want a really good R/C for a resonable price in the R/C world, go to your local hobby shop and look at the items. Pick one you like, and then look online. Also, are you looking for gas or electric? They both have there pluses and minuses. Also, a good quality electric car can run 500+, and a good quality nitro (gas) car can run 600+

Well, if you want a real one, PM me with the details, and I will get you a nice selection.

There are R/C snowmobiles, IIRC. :D

add: rc car and NOT having a failsafe do not mix.

(destroyed chassis and snapped arms running v1rr into curb)

Actually, if you package the receiver correctly, they can mix. I always seal mine in rubber and foam to protect it from sand. As long as your components are rated for moisture (the servo's if gas, and the servo's and motor if electric), then it can run fine as long as you make sure the delecate components are protected.

I concur. I have destroyed two cars because of faulty failsafes. The hobby store sh|t themselves when they realized that there warrenty covered my damage. I had a Nitro 4-Tec that had really nice mods (carbon-fibre chasis), and because the failsafe was faulty, and the brake-linkage broke, I had two choices. I live on a dead end block, with my house the last house with water on two sides. I could either drive it into the water, or run up someone's driveway and into there dirt barracade. I opted for the latter, and lets just say the car didn't come out pretty. Now I have a 1/5th scane Columbia MK5 that is in need of a new engine, so I haven't been doing much this summer.

You don't need to spend 500 bucks for REAL rc cars.

You can put together a good starting kit for about 250-300.

First thing is to head to your local store and see if they'll hook you up. If not...

Here are recommendations for on-road electric. Since you're just starting, best is to go electric and get a kit.

Tamiya 1/10 scale drive shaft Enzo Ferrari kit This is a great kit. It is very solid and runs decently quick out of the box.

2 channel am Airtronics pistol controller Nice cheap controller that does what you need it to do. You can find a bunch of cheap controllers for about 50 bucks that'll make sure you're on different frequencies.

3000mah nimh battery pack Nimhs are great because they you don't have to discharge completely before each new charge (although recommended).

Team Associated Electric Speed Controller with reverse THis is a good ESC because it goes down to 12 turns, which is plenty for a beginner. The stock motor you get with the kit above is like 24 turns I believe.

Duratrax ac/dc peak charger/dischargerGreat charger you can use forever. Also discharges.

EDIT: Forgot to end link. Now has the all the components needed. :D

sorry, sorry. i was thinking more along the lines of ntc3s, rs4 3 ss, mugen mt2s, and such. but i would say youd need around $400 to put together one. if you dont go RTR that is.

Well, yea. You need that much for a good car, but all he needs is a good starting car. Now, don't tell me you didn't jack up your first body. :D Even the best of us can't resist running full speed into a ramp. Well, not exactly what happened but... Long story...

I drove mine up the side of the roof, over the peak at full speed (2nd story), it tumbled the ~13 feet to the 1st floor ledge, then fell down onto gravel. Still works like a charm:D

While we're talking about RC cars I used to like the cheap ones from radio shack. One year I got a $50 (?) car. It wasn't a rocket, but it was ok for me then. It had the forward, reverse, left, right. It ran on standard batteries. A year or so later I sold it to my older brother and he stripped off bits of plastic here and there to minimize weight and also added an extra battery pack onto the car, which sat on its frame. The purpose of this was to juice the engine beyond operating spec with some extra volts. Let me tell you the thing was damned fast after that, for what it was :) Could hardly turn it without getting it to wipe out, partly because the center of gravity was now higher, but also because that little motor was pumping!
