Calm down, deep breaths. Idiots are out there in numbers we can't even imagine. You've only scratched the surface.

I tried that. It's just as frustrating when a customer shuts off his computer and his modem when I ask him explicitly "unplug the power to the modem"

...did I ask to unplug power to the computer? No.
...did I ask to close the windows right after I ask you to open them? No.

Well maybe they discovered like so many others, that windows was not really made to multi-task. That is best left to unix variants. You should thank them for their lesson in OSes and quit calling them idiots. You never know, you might learn something from them. :)

They aren't idiots, they're ignorant. Big difference.

Do you know how to install a camshaft in a 1992 Pontiac LeMans? How to repair a TV? The optimal thickness for an interstate road?

Just because someone doesn't know something, that doesn't make them an idiot, though they might just be one anyway ;)

And you might actually get a tad bit more frustrated trying to teach someone the difference between KDE and GNOME when they can't even find the damn start button on a computer that they've been using for 2 years.

If you were to tell me to tighten a screw, I wouldn't remove the screw and screw it into the wall, would you? I wouldn't do anything you didn't tell me to do.

Ah I remember how first level people always whine about customers.... once they get to second level, they whine about first level support. well, it's like that here.... ;)

Uh... I dunno if the company he works for provides different levels of support, but I am a Tier2 tech. As far as the customer is concerned, I'm top dog.

I whine about people in Tier1 not doing their job. When they do their job, they're great. Their job isn't much, and it's not all that fantastic when they do, but them doing theirs allows me to better do mine.

stupid people i deal with (in order of how much i hate them)
1) tech support
2) customer service
3) customers

the reason tech support is first is that they often tell customers completely wrong information or transfer them to the wrong department, and then i have to tell the customer that tech support was wrong (bad), or i have to transfer them to the dept they should have been in (bad for the customer since they don't like being xfered, bad for me because it hits my close rate).

customer service is next because many of them don't know they are the only dept that can send out OEM software, so they xfer people to me, and i xfer them back. or they promise concessions to the customer and expect me to fill the concession, when i can't do it.

both of the above don't know their frickin' job.

stupid customers i can deal with. its vulgar customers yelling at me that i can't. if its my fault, i'll take my punishment. if she was sent the wrong thing by a different department and then cursing me because i couldn't get into her grandmother's financing account because she doesn't know her grandmother's social security number, i won't stand for it. i'll take a certain amount of abuse, that goes with being on the phone. but someone cursing me and insulting me... gets me pretty mad. the worst is when the customer hangs up before i can warn them not to do it again. i'll warn them once, though i can hang up the first time, because i want to help. but a second time its, "you are the weakest link, goodbye!"

I don't think anyone knows that. Why is when they redo every single express way near me 3 months after they finish they start again because it's falling apart?

See, ElFenix, I'm one of the few that does their job. :) I'm exempt. Well, atleast, I'm exempt unless you hate all tech support for the few goobers that have jobs with the real techs. :p
