I built a HTPC/secondary pc out of spare parts. The HSF has started making a nasty buzzing noise, so it needs to be replaced. This computer is supposed to be made of stuff I'd already had lying around, so I like to keep it cheap. I will be overclocking some (1000mhz to 1250mhz)

Any reccomendations?

I saw the Zalman, but it looked pricy and weird.

BTW, if it matters, its in an Antec Sonata case.

If you're happy with the HS and the fan is the issue, here's what I might suggest.

Go to a B&M, buy a fan adapter for a 80mm fan, fit it and seal it well to the HS(it could be bonded on using four dots of silicone adhesive), fit an existing 80mm fan you have, hook the fan up to the 5V line.

Zap is very well versed in the older Intel chips. If he doesn't post in this thread in the next day or two, PM him. Heed what he offers.

Most Socket A HSFs will also fit Socket 370. For quiet and cheap it's hard to beat the Masscool/Spire Falcon Rock. I have used the WhisperRock, but I like the triple clips and Al/Cu design of the FalconRock better.

If you want something more efficient and compact, take a look at the Thermal Integration V77L. The fan is a bit noisy at full tilt so you may want to use some kind of fan control with it like a Zalman Fanmate. This is the HSF I use. It has a useless instruction sheet, so read a review on one of the techie sites to see how the mounting system works. It's obvious that some of the owners that reviewed this HSF on Newegg have NO mechanical skilz whatsoever...

They both could use a bit of surfacing (lapping) for best performance, but not likely needed if not OCed.

I've used several of those Falcon Rock coolers linked above and they do a great job. You can hear the fan but if you want to bounce for another $5 and pick up a fan mate, or go with the 7 volt fan mod, you can turn them down to a level that is almost inaudible but still very effective.
