Other than going through Pricewatch, do you know of any places to get legal copies of XP Home Edition OEM and additional licenses.

Keep your eye on Hot deals and things will pop up periodically, although it's usually going to be XP Pro that you are going to find the best deals on.

For example 2 differant "hot" deals come to mind that got posted there:
1. Win XP Pro for free at the VS.net launch event (that's where I got one of my licences)
2. Win XP Pro + pack of gum for $30 (that was probably a year ago as part of a promo)

Or of course if you really want to be cheap you could consider running a distro of linux (like I know nothingman, n0cmonkey and bbwf are going to post here probably before I even finish typing my reply).

Did you ever stop to think that maybe he wants to run Windows?

We all know that you guys like and support Linux but that doesnt neccisarily mean that everyone wants to (or even can) run Windows.

There are lots of options for OSes here, and the only time you are really wrong about choosing one (out of the recent ones) is when you assume that your pick is the right answer for everyone.

I support picking what works best for you, if that's Windows more power to you, if that's Linux rock on, if thats Mac OS kick ass. Each one of them is better at specific things and and worse at others.

Thats nice spyordie, but I'll continue to recommend linux in cases where there is no obvious reasons not to. BTW, kinda ironic for you to get snappy, when you're the one who mentioned linux in the first place.

I'm not trying to say that you shouldnt suggest Linux as a viable option, all I'm saying is that there are plenty of good options to pick from and that we shouldnt assume that one of them is "the best" all of the time.

The academic pricing depends on the school. I'd try posting a WTB thread in the FS/FT forum. I got a copy of WinXP Home for about $50 shipped from someone there.

Are you upgrading from Win98? Get the upgrade package, its the FULL version, just wants to know you have win98. You can get at Amazon.com for about $80 now, after a $10 coupon...they have a $40 coupon for WinXP Pro.
