primary use will be for word processing and web browsing alongside occasionally watching a DVD and listening to music.

I'm looking into this notebook:

presario

Is there a better bang for the buck out on the market now, or will there potentially be within the next month?

pounce or wait on that presario?

I just ordered a Compaq v2000z from Office Depot last week, but it has not shiped yet. It has a 14" widescreen for beter DVD viewing. Get the Briteview option if you can. The Compaq Presario AMD Sempron Processor 2800+ Notebook is also available at Office Depot for the same price

Here is a Staples coupon for $30 off that is also accepted at Office Depot

Good luck.

I'd go for it, but I'd also bump the RAM to 512. 256 is very meager for XP.

The major electronics & business supply stores usually offer "loss leader" specials at the end of every fiscal quarter in order to get ppl in the stores and boost their gross sales. Our local Staples is famous for their "bait and switch" where they will advertize a low end computer for less than cost and then try to sell you a more expensive model or gouge you on upgrades like $55 for a second stick of 256mb RAM. As new models come out there is always a better deal around the corner, so if you buy something and see it $100 cheaper the next month don't beat yourself up over it. The 15" Compaq M2000 series are not bad for what you need. If you can upgrade it be sure to to include Briteview and the productivity ports. Buy and install your own RAM upgrade from Newegg.com (a 512mb stick is only $52). The ATI RADEON XPRESS 200M graphics chip uses upto 128mb of shared memory so it will cut your stock 256mb system memory in half.

Good luck.

Definitely go with 512MB or more of RAM. With 256MB, its gonna hurt you pretty bad in the long run. I personally recommend no less than 1GB of RAM for XP for optimal performance.

Hmmm I've got a Compaq Presario 2178CL Notebook I'm trying to sell to recoup some of the costs of my new Thinkpad.

Specs:

-Athlon XP-m 2400+ (1.8gHz 512k L2 cache)
-512MB PC2100 DDR
-40GB 4200 RPM HDD
-15.1" XGA LCD SCreen (no dead pixels)
-DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive
-10/100 EtherNet + 56K Modem (Has mini-pci wireless card but no antennas, so it does not get reception as is)
-PCMCIA Wireless Card included 802.11B
-Battery holds charge for 45-60 mins (new ones are only like $50 on ebay)
- Good cosmetic condition, normal wear from use and toting, nothing broken

My asking price is $450 shipped (in the US).

Drop me a line of anyone is interested in this, I can send you pics or more info and what not if you'd like. webmaster@accessmaryville.com
