Cheap nics causing grief??

Each of the two computers are connected to the other via 4 nics. The 3com on one end goes to the 3com on the other end. The DLink matches the DLink on the other end. When the cable is pulled from either or both ends of the DLink nics, the system shows that they're still connected when in reality they're not, huh? The 3com's don't do that. Now is that the fault of the nics or the operating system? (W2K Server)
