Hey, i'm looking at options for a new car. Something around 10k.

Been looking at Hyundi and Kia casue of the warranties. Is there any others that i should look into?

Both my sisters and my car broke down this weekend, and my dad is simply looking for something cheap $200/month and getting one or possibly even 2 new cars.

That Mazda is nice, but it might be pushing the budget. I'll deff look into it. Anyone else?

Preferably one that dosent have the 2nd transmission die when your 300+ miles from home :)

The newest Honda Civic with the lowest miles you can find. Afaik, there aren't many, if any, NEW cars that can be had sub-$10k aside from perhaps the Koreans.

Vote for Mazda 3 also. I bought one and it's very nice!
Although the one is not the base build. I bought the Mazda 3 S Sedan fully loaded.

Chevy Aveo?
Although at that point you might as well get a Hyundai/Kia and get Korean car + Korean warranty as opposed to Korean car + GM warranty...

Yep. No need to debase one's self with a Kia (hyundai being better, but still not great), when a toyota can be had for so little.

*edit* the xA is 13k... but i would spend a little extra for a scion rather then taking a Kia.

I'm more a fan of the 1-3 year old used car, as long as a Carfax.com run doesn't show it as a former rental.

It feels good to let some other sucker take the initial 20-40% new car depreciation hit.

Make friends with someone that knows something about cars and have them come with you to check out a used Honda. If the car isn't thrashed, it will last you a long time and be basically trouble free. You'll also be rewarded with good resale in case you want to get into something else later. A used Kia won't be worth anything down the road. It's basically a disposable car.

I like the new Mazda3's, but since they're very closely connected to Ford now i'm not sure how much i'd trust it...

I'll vote for a '04 Civic LX...Honda has some kind of cash back thing going on now, so its pretty easy to get a new 5-speed civic lx coupe (for instance) for about $13.5k(+TTL). With 1.9% APR (i think its still offered at 60months, not sure) you're looking at ~$250/month if financed. I've been able to get this quote at 3 places in NJ so far.

If you must have a brand new car I would look no further than the Hyundai Elantra GLS which you can get for a little over $10,000 with manual transmission, 5/60 bumper to bumper warranty and 10/100 powertrain coverage with free roadside assistance.

In December 2003 I snail mailed an AT'er some loss leader ads and he bought a brand new Elantra for around $10k and it wasn't stripped (had power everything, a/c, radio, etc.) If you'd like for me to send you some loss leader ads just PM me your name and mailing address, I'll mail them to you this weekend.

Yes it's not as good as a used car but for a brand new car with warranty it's hard to beat what it offers. I just wouldn't want to be in an Elantra if it were to crash.

The problem with both Scions: they start well above $10K even before adding all of the nifty options available plus they have a "no-haggle" pricing structure which essentially means you WILL be paying MSRP, especially now while demand is still very high.

Let's face it, though, if you're buying new and you only want to spend $10K, you're not going to get a lot of car. Best bet is to try and swing a great deal (with RossMAN's help, of course ;)) or to get something at least slightly used.

I agree, if you need to buy NEW and you need to stay within the $10k. Personally if I had 10k I'd buy a slightly used corolla or civic or something like that, though.

Best post in this entire thread as usual. The Mazda3 starts at over $14,000 and it does not have power windows, locks, or even a/c. If you must buy new, this Hyundai is probably your best bet in terms of features for the price. Despite what many people think, Hyundai's reliability still isn't even close to Japanese or domestic brands. With their warranty, however, the reliability might not even matter to you.

My recommendation is to buy a year or 2 old Mazda Protege or Toyota Corrolla (though the Toyota will cost a touch more) for around $10-11,000.
