For $150 you're not going to get much. It's going to be REALLY small. What rez do you wanna game at. Any particular size you want?

you need 1080p for a ps3, no? no VGA cable for 16:10 or other sub-1080p resolutions, and you're not gonna want a PC monitor running 720p (it'll be 17", tops).

you're going to want to watch for a good sale on a cheap 23" or 24" panel with HDMI in. dell often has a 23" monitor around your price range, but i can't recall what res it is.

I got my 24" asus 1080P LCD with HDMI for $155 after rebate/after bing cashback/after paypal discount/after shipping a couple of months ago. Asus VH242 I think. Black levels and contrast are definitely better than my older Samsung 19" LCD, and there is a button for switching inputs. Unfortunately there is still some light bleed, though not as bad as my older Samsung's, and it seems no worse than my friend's Samsung t260HD. Much bigger when compared to 19".

Playing my xbox 360 on it looks crappy because I am close to it and because of 360's 720p or less resolution. 1080p games like Geometry Wars 2 look awesome though. Otherwise, if I use it from a distance, like a TV, its fine.

Garbage for $150. Not worth it for the PS3.

Not worth it for PS3? The PS3 will limit even a cheap monitor's potential because of the PS3's low resolution output. More like the PS3 is not worth a high end LCD monitor.

A high end LCD HDTV though seems like a better choice.

if he wants to play at a distance, he should save up for a 720p 32" or better TV. 720p LCD's are pretty cheap these days, you may even score a 1080p 32" or 37" for 500 bucks or less if you keep an eye out for deals.

if he's going to play up close, a 24" TN panel would be fine. and cheap.

I picked up this a while back ...

http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/Produc...dlist=celebros

I bought that one because it is as close to having 0 lag in an LCD as possible. It is the monitor they use at the Evo tournament, which is the biggest fighting game tournament in the USA.

I never realized how much lag my 50" DLP had until I played SF4 locally offline at people's houses and tournaments, and was missing moves left and right because I was trying to do moves early, which I was accustomed to. I had been playing on this 50" TV of mine since I bought it 5 years ago.

Now I can't even go back to it and simply play on the 23" monitor instead of the 50" TV. I tried to go back to the 50" and play SF4 on PS3 when my Xbox360 RRoD and holy crap I can't believe I used to think that lag was "normal" when playing SF4. Then right before uncharted 2 came out I hooked my PS3 up to the monitor.

I bought it there at ZZF for about $130 after MIR + bing cashback back in august. It is a great monitor and has great picture! It is 1080p and 16:9 which is what I want for consoles. It has HDMI, VGA, and DVI. I hook my xbox360 up to it via VGA and my PS3 via HDMI.

$150 is a little low but there are plenty of decent 1080p monitors for around $180. As long as it supports DVI-D, you're good, as you can just by an HDMI conversion cable. Most do come with HDMI ports though.
Needs to support HDCP, too. The PS3 _always_ requires HDCP on the HDMI/DVI output. (The 360 does not.)

Yah, I forgot to mention that. AFAIK, most 1080p PC monitors do these days. However, I believe you only need HDCP for playing Bluray movies and DVD upscaling. I used to play my PS3 on a non-HDCP monitor and my games always output at 720p.

The only difference between a high end LCD HDTV and a high end LCD monitor is that a TV has a tuner. That's it. And a tuner isn't going to mean a thing to the PS3. I play my PS3 on a 42" monitor.

Doesn't need to be big since its gonna be next to my computer.

Why not use your current monitor? Get an HDMI to DVI cable for the PS3, and a DVI switchbox (monoprice.com has them pretty cheap) and you're good to go.

My monitor is 16:10 and i doesn't have a aspect option. Anyhow i tried it anyways because i already had a HDMI to DVI. I hooked it up and it looks great. Was able to put it at 1080p but put it back to 720p. Isn't the picture getting stretched because the ps3 is 16:9?

I use my second NEC 20WMGX2 (1680x1050 16:10) for my PS3 either with HDMI -> DVI or by the Component cables

It looks perfect either in 1080p (downscaled in someway) or 720p (upscaled), Yes it stretches 16:9 to 16:10 but it looks fine, and I barely notice it except when I see circle logos at the start of my games. FYI I can do 16:9 if I use component cables, but it does not look as good as by HDMI.

I'd say go for it, most monitors would do. Try out your own monitor before buying a dedicated one, you might be fine with just using that one (stretched slightly).

I used component for ps3 and dvi for pc when I only had one 20WMGX2

that is why i picked up the one i did :)

it is 16:9, does 1080p, as lagless as an LCD can get, has HDMI input on it, and it got rave reviews.
