Cheap modem with good performance

Can anyone recommend a cheap 56K modem that is a good performer? Where can I find a good deal on it?
I prefer it not being a win modem.

I saw this modem in the hot deals forum. Its hardware and serial connection, external makes it sweeter. Where else can you get a new external hardware modem for $29.

I don't know about the quality of the modem but ELSA is a brand name, doubt you'd be dissapointed. I heard the new Aciontec hardware modems are good, not to pricey either at your local Wal-Mart.

 
cheap LT winmodem will do. There are article somewhere on anandtech or someone posted about winmodem vs hardware--there no difference--even on most cases winmodems have lowest ping rate.
 
Hogwash! Show me a winmodem that can outperform this.

That being that however, a winmodem is just fine for most people. Unless your a gamer that is. Then the 20ms lower ping for ~20 bucks more is well worth it imho. The above was with a diamond supra express serial external btw from ebay $40.
