I have a bunch of left-over parts and want to throw a low-end system together to replace an old AMD K6 333 system that I mainly use for browsing and downloading. I'd like the new system to be able to do some low-end gaming for the kids.

I'm looking for either 1) a really, really cheap mobo that supports SDRAM, or 2) a cheap mobo that supports both SDRAM and DDR.

I'm going to be putting this in a mATX case, probably this one:

CaseEdge Micro ATX 300W mATX Case Silver & Black from PC Club

...so will need a mATX mobo.

Parts on hand:

1 GHz Athlon T-bred with fan/heatsink
384 MB Generic Ram (1x128 + 1x256)
GeForce 2 MX 32MB
CD-RW Drive
A couple of old IDE hard drives
Netgear FA311 10/100 network card
Old 5.1 sound card.
Monitor

Would prefer to use sound and lan on mobo if possible.

Hoping to pay less than $50 shipped.

Recommendations?

Secondary recommendations if I go with a cheaper ATX case?

Thanks in advance!

Gearxs has a Gigabyte board model 7zmmhc with kt133a chipset (sound, video, etc) for about $25 shipped. Be sure to mention pricewatch if the total cost doesn't match when you order. This board uses sdram only. No boards available that use both sdram and ddram, probably due to space limitations with this size board.

Actually there used to be a few mATX boards that could use either SDRAM or DDR. Biostar and MSI (among others) made them. I think (from memory) Biostar M7VIG and MSI KM2M. Those used the KM266 chipset, meaning FSB 200/266 and PC1600/2100 support. CPUs up to XP2600+ on 266MHz FSB. They had integrated video/sound/LAN, plus had an AGP slot and some PCI.

UNFORTUNATELY they've disappeared from places like Newegg. Newegg had the MSI board until about two weeks ago, now those seem to be no longer available. Perhaps try reqesting the board in the for sale/trade board.

Or try a local Mom & Pop type store. My supplier still has lots of MSI KM2ML.

Thanks for all the help.

I decided to go the cheap route and get the

Gigabyte 7ZMMH VIA KM133A mATX Socket A MB w/Video, Sound

at compgeeks.com, despite the lack of DDR support. I have some PC133 lying around... I don't have any extra DDR lying around. When I want to upgrade this in a year or so from the 1GHz Athlon I want to put into it, I'll just thow in an Athlon XP 2600+ when they come down in price and are really, really cheap.

Thanks for all the advice.
