Cheap man's EXTERNAL Cd-R using USB enclosure bays? Does it work?

I need an external USB CD-R for my laptop. I understand that 4x write is the max you can do with the current state of USB. Firewire isnt neccessarry at this stage.

What im wondering though is it possible to get a USB external enclosure bay, and throw in a EIDE 4x cd-r? will this work? has anyone done it? anything to look out for when attempting this?
