I am looking for a laptop but I can't spend much, as I am a broke @ss college student. What really bugs me about all the machines Ive seen is that even the customization options on sites such as Dell's dont give me the flexibilty I want. I want a notebook with around a 10 gig hard drive, at least 64 meg but prefferably 128 or above memory. Also, I want a good video board, none of this integrated shared memory junk. Also, a sound card with at least the capablities of an SB16. Processor speed is not too important as I wont be doing too much hardware intensive work. A 10/100 nic is a neccesity, a modem is not. A good screen would be nice, and I dont care too much about weight/size. Anybody have any idea who sells the most customizable and affordable notebooks? Im looking to spend under $1000 if at all possible. thanks.

You can get a 2500 or 4000 for under $1K.
 
I took a look at the Dell Laptops and in your price range they don't offer stand alone video chipsets. In fact very few do. But the system I would recommend would be the Sager NP8560C at 1300.00, it has the ATI Rage Mobility-128 16MB Video Chipset and 3D Sound, even though is software rendered. I have a NP5120 and the Sound was one of the first things that impressed me. Plus it can play most 3D PC Games matching it's video memory (4MB). I know it's a bit more that you wanted to spend, but it's the closest laptop I could find to match you needs vs. price. They also have systems for less that 1K if your willing to give up the stand alone Video Memory.

There are several good deals fitting what you describe right now.
