I have wanted one for a long while now.

I don't need a good CPU or GPU. This is mostly wanted so I can read documents.

Now, inexpensive products do exist some well over 1920x1200 whcih was my minimum in the search criteria. Update: Want a 10".

Are any of these brands good that cost less?

EDIT:
Wow, the Onda reviews I am fidning are saying it is a pretty good tablet. Granted that V791 model needs a firmware update right out of the gate to get some popular apps working. They are $200-$210

EDIT 2: Nexus 10 at $360 would be nice but I don't want to spend that much.

Nook hd 9" doing 1920x1280. $150.

Wow. Thanks!

With the Nook HD+, be prepared for limited support from B&N. They're trying to spin off the Nook business, and they've gotten in bed with Microsoft so don't expect much from them as far as software updates and support. I'm not sure what the community has done with those models either.

If I'm not mistaken, the Allwinner CPU that powers that Onda in your op is a quad core A7 design. Ie, extremely extremely extremely under powered. I know you stated you didn't need a good CPU/GPU since you only going to read documents, but those A7s are going to choke on even small documents. Large PDFs will make them cough up a lung.

For reading though, depending on what you're reading, you may find the ~8-9in tablets more to your liking than the 10in tablets. They're simply more comfortable to hold and use. LG's 8.3in Gpad is 350 and would be a good match for what you want, but its twice as much as the Nook HD+. But you'll get a far better CPU, storage, Google services, and open Android. And even given LG's relatively poor reputation, I'd expect better support from them than B&N/MS.

Why the FUD? Nook has official Play store -- and therefore GApps -- and a much stronger mod community than any LG.

Both have effectively unlimited storage through the SD, and in fact the Nook has a 32gb version that the LG doesn't.

I've picked up 2 Nook HD+'s on sale on ebay for $109, refurbished. Wait a bit, and you should be able to catch one on sale. And it should be perfect for your needs, particularly at that price.

Same company (notoriously slow shipping, expect 2 weeks) for $129.

They're a little laggy, but the screen is excellent, has expandable memory, nice build quality, and with an active hacking community, you can put custom roms on it and modify the heck out of it if you want.

I was going to ask about this. Is there a reason to root (Running Android) or should I just stick with the stock B&N ROM?

I don't expect to actually buy books granted I might. Call me old school but I prefer paper books. I need it mostly to read PDF documents whcih I'd imagine the stock B&N ROM does just fine. Especially since I read that it comes with Google Play installed.

The first thing I did when I bought mine (Nook HD+) was to root it and flash CM 10.1.

The process is super simple and very well worth it.

Not really IMO. CM might be a little faster & smoother than stock, but not much. It is, however, very easy to do.

The one and only thing I'm concerned about the Nook HD+ is that it has a proprietary connector for the charging cable. How are you guys dealing with it? Buy a couple spare?

It's so annoying that B&N does this although it could just easily go with standard micro-USB.

Support ? What are you talking about ?

There's no issue with Barnes and Noble "support". You buy it, don't like it ? Take it back.

If it breaks it has a warranty.

What other "support" are you thinking is going to be "better" about LG ?

Look, I don't like that BN and Amazon put a lot of book stores out of business, but, have you ever been to a BN store ? Their staffs are more friendly and helpful than almost any large retail chain you can name.

I doubt if LG even has a human being a person can talk to about an issue.

Is it microchipped or is it just a plain old cable?

I guess I would just use the Nook stock and if I don't like it for some reason, I would root it.

About a year from now, there are going to be some nice $200 Android tablets as display prices tank. Apple is in deep poo if they think they can keep selling iPads for $600 forever.

Your scenario won't happen.

You have to understand value and how its perceived by consumers. You can buy Kmart branded cola for 69 cents, has that put Coca Cola out of business ?

Apple has an almost unrivaled brand. And for the most part, deservedly so.

And who's their chief rival for devices ?

Samsung ? You mean the 2nd tier dvd player maker ? That's where their brand is perceived, although they've made a lot of progress. But their brand is not close to Apple.

And then there's the Android brand. There's lots of great Android products. There's even more junk. How does that balance out ?

The first calculators cost $400. Today they are $5. Apple can not rely on tablets and phones forever. In 5 years, they will be a commodity where the hardware costs are low. I don't care how well built a calculator is. if everyone sells them for $10, you can not charge $600 for yours bcause ith as a machined aluminum case.

To answer the cable question, you pretty much have to use original B&N brand. I've not seen any aftermarket versions. The cable itself is fine and is much easier to plug in than the annoying micro-USB. Snag a couple off ebay and call it a day.
