I can't find the thread where a member attached a swiftec clone
to his 9700. The heatsink he used was like $6 or so. I'm looking for
either that heatsink or any ones you can reccomend. I'm planning to
cut it down to fit the core properly and replace the cheap uneven one i
currently have that is giving me problems.

I say spend $15 and get an Arctic Cooling VGA Silencer, it's the best out there for Radeon cards IMHO.

I have Arctic Cooling VGA Silencers on my 9700s and 9800s... they work great.

Wow... can the fan even get any air so close to that sound card?

Yeah, at this point the whole setup is less than optimal.
I was first running the card with no fan, bare heatsink only.
The heatsink was pretty warm and it wouldn't handle prolonged
gaming let alone overclocking. Even with the minimal air flow, which
really isn't that bad despite the picture, the heatsink is cool and the card
will overclock fine and perform well in games, what's needed are ram sinks
so i can OC the ram. The problem i'm trying to diagnose is whether the heatsink
is seated squarely on the chip, ie no gaps, and its devilishly hard to determine that.
Also after practicing on that old stock athlon (original) heatsink i want to get something
good to cut down and put in. I was looking at the new swiftech's mcx___-V, and trying to get one used,
but that maybe over kill. A 1u copper heatsink may be sufficient.
