Cheap HD Cooling Tip

This isn't exactly revolutionary but I thought I would send it out as an FYI.

After adding a new WD120-JB to my file\jukebox server I noticed the bottom side was running pretty warm, almost hot under heavy use. I had 2 unused drive bays at the top of the case so I moved HD to the top and left a slot between the drive and CDRW to allow for better air flow.

Once I did this I got to thinking about HD fans but I really didn't want to get another fan or kit. I already had a few 80mm's left over from other projects so I cut and folded some double sided tape to use as pads for the corners, stuck them to the fan and then placed the fan on top of the CDRW so air would be blown directly on the bottom of the WD.

I ended up with a great HD cooler that didn't cost me anything extra and it isn't any louder than before. The fan was a low RPM generic and I really can't even hear it above my PS fan.

This may not work for everyone, but if you have the room you can do it. Naturally, if you don't have decent case ventilation to start with then you would want to use fix that first, then work on the HD.

Just thought I would post this as a tip for anyone interested.

I've got pretty good air flow in the case which is probably why it works as well as it does, but you may be referring to the close tolerance between the drive and the fan. It was about 1/4" or close to it but I have raised it little more since that pic was taken.
The clearance is about 3/8" now.

The fan is a generic low volume\RPM and doesn't push a ton of CFM, and since the fan is open all the way around except for the corner it doesn't have any problem pulling in the air it needs. For higher CFM fans I would have definitely left more room for air intake intake.

Since this was a "fly by the seat of my pants idea" that I gave all of 15 seconds of thought to before trying, the only piece of test equipment I had to verify that it actually worked was a plain 'ol piece of paper. It flutters like a bird when placed between the fan and the drive.

For adding a steady breeze right to the bottom of the HD it works fine.

Thanks for the question.

hrm, I did a similar thing. Mounted my HDs on 5.25" adapter rails, then cut out the center of two bay covers and mounted a fan to that. Seeing as I have 3 IBM deskstars that have never failed, I think it worked well.
