UPDATE (3/22/2011): Leaning towards an HD5770. Should I chance getting one from craigslist? Some guy is selling one for $70: http://newyork.craigslist.org/brk/sys/2280281688.html

I have another thread about problems with no video signal. I believe the video card is dead, so I need to replace it.

  • Don't care about gaming performance
  • Needs to have 2x DVI ports
  • Able to drive high resolutions w/o slowdown in Windows 7 with all features turned on.
  • Support hardware acceleration for Flash, and Mozilla FireFox.
  • Will drive 24", and a 22". May upgrade the 22" to a 24"-28" sometime in the next couple of years so the card should be able to handle that.
  • Preferably low power, and quiet.

What's the best bang for the buck card that meets all the above requirements?

This may be off topic, but try baking the card first to see if you can revive it. Many have tried and successfully got their 8800s working again.

You could always pickup a used 8800GT / 9800GT (or some such) from FS/FT.
I nabbed two eVGA Superclocked 8800GTs for $80 shipped here last week (needed single-slot nVIDIA cards).

Willing to spend in the 80-100 range. I was hoping that price range would at least give me a bump in 2d performance (as per the use patterns I listed in the OP). Is that possible?

Do not care about gaming. Specs:

ip35-pro+
Q6600
8GB
Win 7 x64

If you want to stick with NV, then $80-$100 is GTS 450 territory. It's not fast by any means, but it's actually a decent improvement over the 8800GTX. Any 450 would meet your performance requirements, power is fairly low (TDP: 106W), and for noise there are at least a couple of passive models along with actively cooled ones.

Go used and grab a GTX 275 or GTX 285 for under $100. It should be roughly double your old performance for very little cash.

If you don't want a gaming card, why are you getting one? There are passive Radeon HD4350s with 2xDVI ports that would suit your needs fine. And they are way cheaper. I don't know of any HD5450s with 2xDVI though (would be even better, 55nm vs 40nm = less heat).

A HD4350 does everything you're asking about:
- not a gaming card
- has 2xDVI
- both of them support high resolutions obviously
- full GPU acceleration for Aero and Flash
- very low power and no noise at all for a passive model

I have been using a HD4350 for a long time before I came back to PC Gaming. The card did everything perfectly, except gaming.

EDIT: There are now current generation HD 6450 cards, unfortunately they are OEM only (and from what I have seen, one DVI and one HDMI port). If you can grab one with a HDMI -> DVI converter, those would be best IMO (or maybe your LCDs have HDMI?). Though I doubt you can find one easily.

Thank you all for your advice. I grew impatient, wanting to get my computer working again, so I ordered a 5750 ($54 - $10 coupon code = $44) + HDMI-to-DVI cable ($8) from newegg.

No. 2D performance has not been a limitation for years. If something feels slow to you, it isn't the 2D performance.

That was my exact thought. The 5750 is overkill, but $44 is pretty damn cheap.
