Cheap/Free alternative to Adobe Premier Pro (video editing)

Any tips on quality video editing software that is similar to Premier Pro? Wanting to do split screen videos (4-8 vids), etc. Most of the stuff I've tried only allows 1 or 2 videos during split screen.

Well the quality* part may be debatable but aviutl has been very usefull to me,it's freeware and portable ... awesome.

* quality as in interface or flashy plugins the video it produces is fine

There's Cinelerra for GNU/Linux. I don't do video editing, but it's pretty well regarded.

AviSynth can certainly do split screen videos. Put these together and you might be able to figure it out:

But it's more like a programming language than normal video editing software.

The newest version of Davinci Resolve Lite includes an NLE that's similar to Premiere.
