Cheap external array

I got HP Slimline s3750t and would like to add cheap external storage, starting with 1 TB, and eventually expanding to 10. For aesthetic reasons, I'd like to keep all hardrives in a single enclosure, with a single USB or Firewire connection to my PC.

Questions:
1. USB or Firewire?
2. Use external hardrives or internal?
3. Which rack/controller to use?
