so i am planning on taking a LONG road trip this summer, by myself...

leavaing from AL and making my way towards CA...then up to WA...if possible, into canada and AK...make my way over to N/S dakoda...head down to CO...over to Nebraska (NK?) back up into Chicago, then down to AL

i currently drive a grand marquis...and its a damn nice car...especially for long trips (its huge. comfortable..etc.) but the mileage is only about 23-25 highway and it has over 230k on the clock...i dont think its gonna blow anytime soon, but a trip like this could push it over the edge and i dont wana get stranded half-way across the country
that being said...i'm thinking about purchasing a cheap econo box for the trip...then selling it afterwards...
soo...make suggestions...must have high gas mileage...5spd preferably (never know, i might wana keep it) and needs to be cheap (under 3k)

i'm thinking about an old celica but they only get about 31...i'm looking for something more towards the 40mpg range...maybe a Pasaeo? old civic? i dunno...thought about doing it on a cycle...but i know my back would hate me for life :'(

A Civic will be great and will be enjoyable to drive as well. What about an older 4-cylilder Mazda 626?

I used to drive the 1996 Mazda 626 and it was a fun car, very involving to drive although it had lots of problems from the previous years. It gave good gas mileage, but the Civic will likely get much better mileage.

raildogg: no way in hell will i take a mazda that far...a buddy of mine has a nice civic hatchback...i'm thinking about seeing if he will trade cars with me if i pay for new tires, oil change, and some gas money (cuz my car gets WAY less) if he would let me use it

i buddy of mine just bought a VERY nice 4dr civic (91) for like 700 bucks...this is close to ideal for me

the car doesnt have to be huge (since it is just one person) but i would like to be able to sleep in it a lot as well as carry camping/hiking equipment

How old of a car are you looking for? A buddy & I rented a 2004 Corolla for a cross Canada trip.......... worked like a champ and got something like 43mpg on the whole trip.

Cheers,

He he he .......... ~$800 for the month unlimited mileage :) (we also waived the insurance since we have our own insurance from being a long time good drivers with our local auto insurance company (ICBC, yeah gov't owned insurance) ).

Eh........ since you will be crossing borders........ it will cost more. I know when I rent a car to go to the USA........ they add on an extra $5-10 a day.

Also if you don't have any special way to waive the rental insurance...... look at your prices to almost double.

yah...you know its funny...but looking at the cost difference...

if i were to rent..i',m better off just using my own car...as the difference in gas price wouldnt be enough
same deal goes for buying a car...but i could sell it when i'm finished and potentially save money...hmmmmmmmmmmmm

hmmmmmmmmm....i need to do some work to my car anyways...maybe i can grab me a cheap tranny and rebuild it with a SUPER high 4th gear...would be slow as balls in that gear but mileage would be nice

i dunno...maybe if i do a massive overhaul i can increase the mileage a good bit

There's more of us than you think. I know at least 5 in the BHM area alone. I'm in BHM myself -- not far from the Tuscaloosa County line.
