Cheap & Easy Install Water Filtration system (rental/for hardwater)

I live in a rental and I would like to add a whole house water filtration system (mostly for hardwater).

Hoping to find something that meets all or some of these parameters

1) Cheap enough I can leave it behind / sub $300
2) Easy to install. Landlord doesn't want me cutting up water lines unnecessarily.
3) Washable filter? Would like to avoid constantly replacing filters.

All in all I'd prefer to spend less than $300. The place has pretty bad hardwater but landlord isn't willing to do anything about it.

If you don't mind the look of them, check out the counter top filters that attach to the faucet. Just search amazon for countertop filter and you should find them for $100 or less.

There are also countertop reverse osmosis systems, but that's a whole lotta ugly up on the counter.

I need something for the whole house; not just faucets.

you need a softener if you have hardwater.
The whole house stuff you linked up is designed mostly for those of us on wells, it filters out big stuff so it does not tear up the softener and appliances.

What does "unnecessarily" mean in the context of installing a whole house system?
Unless there are joints/couplings (that can be disassembled), cutting pipe is necessary.

The Eddy Electronic Water Descaler may be an option for you.
