what are my choices for a cheap dual zone audio system?
sonos is out of the question in terms of price. :(

my kitchen and the back yard are the 2 zones.
the audio inputs are CD, pandora, and mp3 from an old smartphone. the amplifier(s) will output sound to the kitchen or backyard, or both.
example, song A is playing in kitchen from CD while another song B from smartphone is playing in the backyard. very rarely would i want 1 same song to be played in 2 zones but i would love to have this option. finally, since the back yard is huge, i would like to have 4 speakers. and there's the already 2 ceiling mounted speakers in the kitchen.
please advise on how i can do this...what are the equipment i need, feel free to share amazon links. note, i already have 6 speakers....

thanks!

I would imagine just a 2 zone receiver would do the trick. Ive been out of the receiver loop/market a while, but this was first one to come up on Amazon.

thanks! it looks really good
i did not think of AV receiver because the last AV i used exclusively to play music, it didnt produce bass. strangely, when i connect the speakers to a cheap Lepai, there was bass!

no subwoofers were used in either case. did i miss something?
is there a spec on an AV that will let me know if the sound will come out with some bass without a subwoofer?

not all receivers can play every source on every zone

be sure to verify

as for bass, that is handled with the setup of the speakers
large - send bass
small - not as much, usually has a crossover point

i think i will get this for $140
http://www.amazon.com/Sherwood-RX5502-Dual-Zone-Stereo-Receiver/dp/B000RGR50U?ie=UTF8

im not sure if it will let me mix and match inputs to output speakers though. for example, playing input1 on speakers A (kitchen) while input2 is playing on speakers C and D (backyard). for a big party, i would want to play input1 on all speakers A, C and D.

No WiFi support? AirPlay? Does that matter to you?

The higher end ones have iOS/Android apps and streaming support, so you can control everything from your iPhone or whatever.

It look like you would be able to do what you want. Just be aware it doesnt have any HDMI, USB etc inputs. Looks like they are all stereo inputs.

it would be nice to have wifi/airplay or even chromecast support. but i can live without.

i like what that Yamaha can do with Pandora, but the outputting speakers is very limited. i need to output at least 6 speakers. 2 speakers in the kitchen and 4 in the backyard. maybe 8 speakers later
most likely i will set up 2 raspberry pi as the 2 sources. that way, i can control the music on the phone. i still cant confirm if the rpi will do Pandora/Spotify. i know for sure the rpi can play mp3 on usb stick and internet radios.
