Cheap DLPs (Do they exist yet?)

I've been waiting for the prices to come down on these, something under 2k would be great. When I last did research on DLP screens I think Samsung were introducing 1080p sets onto the market. (oddly enough I don't they accept 1080p input though)

So what's the cheapest DLP TV you've seen and where?

EDIT: I've been reading a lot about the new Xbox and PSX will feature 1080p outputs. And while it might be awhile before developers have product that will take advantage of those higher resolutions at least the technology is there. GTA or Zelda in 1080p will be nothing short of amazing. Also I'm hoping next year that the first generation of HiDef dvd players will hit the market, if so it will only be a matter of time I'm guessing before some 1080p movies will start to surface.

I'm getting this tv myself. At $1599 with 2 years of 0% intrest.

looks pretty sweet, especially for the price. It even has the latest chipset, the only drawback (if you call it that) is the lack of 1080p support. Since the PS3 and Xbox360 will both support 1080p I think I'm definitely going to want that option. Also I'm hoping that the first hidef DVDs will hit the market early next year so its a good chance that 1080p material might start to surface.

Good luck finding 1080p for under 2k.
If you do let me know.

I'm thinking that maybe when more hidef devices start hitting the market it might drive the prices down on the current crop of hidef sets. Also it seems like every generation of DLPS/LCDS are a bit cheaper to manufacturer. At any rate I'm crossing my fingers, maybe by christmas or early next year we'll see a big price drop.

Not reasonable for you... maybe reasonable for the OP.

I saw he mentioned 1080p, but I assume he doesn't expect to get one in his under $2000 range. I thought he just wanted cheap DLP technology which is why I mentioned DLP projectors.

The first 1080p DLPs just came out recently ($3500 for a 50" Samsung), and the closeout older 720p models are selling for over $2K.

So most likely in a year you'll still pay $2K for 1080p, for closeouts of this year's models.

720p might be better to aim for on a budget, since that's 1280x720 which is still a very nice resolution and will probably run at a much smoother framerate than 1920x1080.

I believe for the most part this years models have been released or are being released. The prices will remain relatively steady for a year. This time of year is when all the displays are released to the public.

good time of year it is. Your best bet is to find last years sammy DLP. Might be able to get one under 2K.

not gonna be able to touch 1080p under 2K for a long time.

While PS3 and XBox 360 will both *support* 1080p, both have set their software's baseline as 720P. Also, most of the sets out right now *upsample* to 1080P, as there are no devices which natively *output* 1080P.

Incidentally, I have a Samsung 61" DLP, the HLP6163W, and it's *awesome*. The bad thing about HDTV, though, is that when you play non-HD content on it (most movies, TV, PS2, XBox) you realize how sh1tty it looks :) The best thing I've seen in a game was surprisingly Nintendo's Zelda: The Wind Waker, which, while not HD, looks *great* on my set.

XBox360 is not pushing 1080p at all. Their games are going to be standard 16:9 at either 720p or 1080i.

However PS3 is guaranteeing that every game will be 1080p at the lowest. But we all know how sony's promises about their systems have been in the past ...
