Cheap, disposable phones...

As the title says, I want something for JUST making occasional calls. My wife has a Nexas 5 smart phone, but she wants me to carry something I use in an emergency; something small and light to fit in a pocket. Cheap so if it falls into the water while I'm fishing or gets lost, I won't shed any tears. And, of course, no expensive long term contracts!

Thank you in advance for any advice.

Go to Walmart or Target and buy a cheap Trac Phone like this one with double minutes: http://www.walmart.com/ip/TracFone-S...nutes/24623087

The service should run you as low as $20 every three months.

The Trac Phone sounds like just what I want. Does it have it's own number and carrier connection, or would I use our existing carrier? It would be nice to avoid hassling with our carrier and just start using the phone right out of the package. That way, if lost or broken, I can simply buy another and start over again.

Yes, the TracFone does come with its own carrier connection.

You will need to activate with TracFone before using it though. If you lose the phone, TracFone can transfer your minutes and phone number over to a replacement phone.

well, those Trac Phone are prepaid "disposable" ones with it's own number and carrier connection, completely separate to your original phone number/carrier

if it makes sense, you could instead add a line to your plan (eg, t-mobile, adding a line costs $10/month)

too bad in USA, there isn't a "multi-sim" option by any of the providers (i.e. you get a second sim that uses the same number as your original line)

Thank you, that's exactly what I wanted to know. My wife ran her last phone through the washing machine and what a hassle it was for her to get a new phone and activate it. I still live in the 20th century and I work hard to keep my retired life uncomplicated.

I'm off to Walmart to grab a Trac Phone and perhaps the wife will leave me alone about it. I have a bad heart and she means well, but....
