the g/f is moving to cali for an internship, i need to find her a laptop. note I have no money and the less i can spend the better. also i need to find something that is decent and will do office applications, internet and snood games lol.

I have seen the dell ads for small bus with free printer and mem upgrade $599. Anything else worth looking at?

Avaratec has some okay stuff.

700 dollar averatecs(prolly cheaper if you can find a deal)...sempron 2700, cd/dvd, 15in screen, etc...i know its 100 more than the dells...but semprons are better than cellys...IMHO at least
i swear by averatecs...the quality of the build is amazing...no IBM thinkpad...but still...VERY VERY VERY good for the price...

im an averatec fanboy...as far as i know there are 4 averatecs in the family...all working exactly as the day they were bought and some are over a year old(battery excluded of course)
so look into it...hope you find what you're looking for

i am very against averatec and here is why...
first, power connector broke on my laptop (common problem, they said), they tell me to send it in to get it fixed, i send it in, they send it to some random person in san diego unfixed (she just wanted 2 driver cds), get it sent back to their warehouse (after the random person in san diego tells me what happened, averatec didnt care), they leave it outside after it was shipped, it gets wet and ruined... they then tell me it will take 2 months to replace, but that i can either take the value of the laptop $750 (which I bought for $900 just 2 months before and was still $900 anywhere to buy) or get a replacement, either way was taking 2 months, so i took the check... 3 months later, still having not received the check, i receive my laptop back, unfixed, and now with a broken hdd, at least, thats what they said, i never opened it. they told me it wasn't ruined and they made a mistake, so i cant get a check instead. after calling them everyday for an hour each day, they finally agree to just send me the check they had agreed to, but i had to send the computer back in (my money) and I could only get a check for $600 b/c that is the value of the laptop now. i sent this laptop in originally in late november and just got my $600 check last week for something they screwed up on a computer i had for 2 months that i did nothing wrong to.

So, i lose $300 for a computer i had for 2 months due to a company screw up. and i get the money back 6 months after the problem happened.

I will never deal with averatec again.

I will grant you, the machine was nice, light, and cheap when it worked. If there are any issues with the machine though, don't expect help.

Just wanted to get that off my chest before someone buys an averatec. Avoid them like the plague.

I would suggest an HP with Sempron Mobile. Hard to beat with some of the rebates and give-aways they have in the weekly sales now.

.bh.

for what she seems to want, that dell might be the best way to go... i dont know where else you could get a decent laptop for $600.

Does the printer upgrade matter? Would she ever use it?
Also, how much RAM does it have? Does that upgrade put it to the minimum you should look at, 512?

wow...im really sorry to hear about that. i always look up the bad stories when im buying form any company for the first time but i haven't heard one that bad. and i didn't know the power connect was a big problem. getting back to the thread however, sentinal...as you can see..here's the good and the bad....now you gotta decide. oh and please oh please..do not go for a HP or compaq unless you are very very much on a tight budget....ive worked retail and if you saw how many HP and compaqs came back for returns...exchanges....and/or warranty repair...you would not even consider it...
