I would agree with csc... don't get color if you don't need it, monochrome laser is the way to go. Understandably, it's not the cheapest out of the gate, but you will save money in the long run by not having to buy ink cartridges so often.

And, yes, you should be able to run any MF printer as a stand-alone.

All of the above, plus, the short answer to your stem question is 'yes.'

Another vote for a laser printer, for the reasons given. I do not miss any part of inkjet printer maintenance.
And go for the high-capacity toner cartridges, if they're available. The cost per page is usually a lot lower than with the standard cartridges.

I have an HP monochrome laser 1018 model and simply love it!!

I use it for my office and print quite often. One of the best printers I ever bought in terms of value for budget.

Replacement toner and drums are available on eBay for dirt cheap.

Use it with any scanner you want. Beats any inkjet copier for black & white, hands down.

Edit: Just saw cscpianoman's link, above. I think it uses the same cartridges as this printer. Double check that, but the ability to use cheap generic toner cartridges is a BIG plus.

Thanks for the suggestions and the answer I was looking for. This will be used in a childcare setting. The office has a leased printer/color copier. But the teacher can not leave the room to make copies while children are there so a stand alone cheap alternative is really what is called for.

Another advantage of the laser is that toner cartridges are a lot more resilient to intermittent use and can have a much longer shelf life than inkjet cartridges.

Me too joins the voting for for a laser MFC

It somewhat depends on what you plan to scan to determine your options. A sheet feed scanner may due for some options, but it also helps to have a flat bed type scanner in addition. And at times it very much helps to have an auto document feeder. (ADF)

As for me, I have a brother 7820N monochrome laser MFC I bought used for $60.00. That would do everything our OP required plus fax at G3 speeds. You should be able to find its equivalent for about $150.00 new.
