Cheap card with component output

Going to be building a pvr soon and probably want to use component out (price of a good dvi cable is too high to deal with at the moment) looking for a graphics card in the $100 range that can supply the apropriate output. Looks like a radeon 9600 would do the trick, but cant find any stores that still cary one made by ati, do the ones made by saphire, abit... work with ati's component output adapter?

The R9600 is the cheapest card (that I know of) that can use a component out. I sure hope the adapter works with third-party cards; I'm hoping to do the same thing with my Sapphire 9600 once I get an HDTV (although that could be a while...). I don't know why it wouldn't work.

Also, you don't need a Monster mega-super-duper-ultra-extreme $100 DVI (or component) cable for an HDTV. Regular ones work fine.

Finding a BBA 9600 is going to be very difficult because ATI has stopped manufacturing these cards I think. Of course the 3rd party manufacturers comp. out should work fine. Also you can get the card much cheaper if all you want is a card with component out on it.

The cheapest built by ATI card with comp. out on it I can find is the radeon 9000 for $40 here

Though you can get an S3 savage card with component out for $14.50 here

Component (YPrPb, for HDTV), not composite/S-Video (for SDTVs). Those cards you linked do NOT have component video output capability.

Ah, got my words mixed up! A DVI cable would be the cheaper option in my opinion. They have $8 DVI cables at pricewatch and $28 Philips DVI cables at Wal-mart if you are looking for brand name/local availability. However the adapter you are referring to here works with an 8500 which would be the cheapest, but in your $100 price range, the 9600 fits right in.

DVI doesn't help if your HDTV doesn't *take* DVI/HDMI (and only newer and/or more expensive ones generally do). I had forgotten the adapter works on the 8500 as well, but they can be a bit hard to find new nowadays...

If DVI is an option on your TV or projector, use it. Bite the bullet now and avoid making a huge mistake that you'll regret later.

Actually, I've read that (at least for CRT HDTVs and projectors) you can sometimes get better results via component video (in terms of things like overscan and correctly syncing the video signal; there shouldn't be any PQ differences). A lot of analog HDTV sets apparently don't do DVI/HDMI very well.

For a digital projector or display (like an LCD or plasma TV), DVI/HDMI is definitely the way to go if it's available.

its a plasma, so I will just use dvi out. Any suggestions on a good but not particularly expensive cable (ie dont want to spend $100+ on a monster cable, atleast not yet)

I've heard some good comments on arrow cables (around $15-$20) but you may want to query the manufacturer of your plasma tv/display for best compatibility
