Hey,

I am about to return the toshiba 12x dvd rom I got since it has a hard time reading many cd's, including pressed cd's. It might be just a bad one, or a bad model, but I have had problems with toshiba drives in the past, so I am looking to replace it with a decent dvd drive.

I am looking for a decent, moderm and cheap dvd drive that will be used to read both dvd's and regular cdroms. I was hoping for some recommendations. I bought this drive for $67 and I don't want to go too much above that.(I have no real need for a 16x or faster, I just need something decent but under 80 shipped would probably be my budget.)

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Orie

Hmm, I love my Toshiba 12x DVD rom drive and most people who have one would probably agree.

The only good alternative to the Toshiba DVD drives would be a Pioneer drive, but those have a bad habit of being too loud. Try swapping for another Toshiba drive, it could possibley be just your drive.

I just order my Toshiba 16x/40x and got it yesterday! It's definitely the best drive I've ever owned. It's fast and it also detected the type of media much faster than my crummy Creative drive.

I have a shuttle dvd drive that is pretty good. My only complaint about it is the fact that the initialization of it with a cd in it seems too long. Maybe a 5 second delay.

My 12x Toshiba 1402 is a great drive. One of toshiba's strong points is that they read anything, is your drive out of warranty?

Check the Hot Deals forum, theres always a good deal to be had.
Last week I scored a Pioneer 8X DVD drive, brand new, for 29 bux.
It is at the Office Max stores sold under the I/O Magic brand. They are on clearance now. I dont have the SKU number with me, but theres a thread about it on the Hot Deals forum. So far the drive is great i have no complaints with it.

Pioneer makes good drives, and they even have a SLOT loading drive, which I have (10xDVD, 40xCDROM). This drive is just great, and I don't think I'll ever go back to a tray-loading drive. All the tray-loading drives I've looked at have cheap, flimsy trays that could break off too easy.

Hi-Val also distributes Pioneer drives under their name, but are usually cheaper. You may want to check their drives out.
