Internal optical drives from Softwareandstuff.com (plus shipping and sales tax, where applicable):

Samsung 48x CD-RW + 48x CD-ROM Drive Bundle (Black) - $17.99 (out of stock)

LG 48x24x48 CD-RW Drive (Black) - $14.99 (out of stock)

Samsung 52x32x52 CD-RW Drive (Black) - $22.99

Compaq 16x DVD-ROM Drive - $19.99

Black floppy drives from ShopAMPM.com (free shipping):

2-pack Misumi 3.5" Internal Floppy Drive - $15.98 ($7.99 each)

10-pack Misumi 3.5" Internal Floppy Drive - $65.00 ($6.50 each)

2-pack Sony 3.5" Internal Floppy Drive - $17.00 ($8.50 each)

10-pack Sony 3.5" Internal Floppy Drive - $65.00 ($6.50 each)

Internal USB Card Readers

NEW Foxconn Black Internal USB2.0 7-in-1 Card Reader (Gateway OEM specs) - $8.00 (plus shipping and tax, where applicable) - Note: this reader is USB2.0 full-speed, which is limited to 12Mbits/sec or approx 1.5MBytes/sec.

Compgeeks shipping charges are structured to favor quantity purchases. If you buy two or more it will help offset the initial shipping charge. For example, S&H for one unit to my zip code is $6.00, but adding 1 ~ 8 additional units to my shopping cart increases S&H by only $1.00 ($7.00 S&H for any quantity between 2 ~ 9). Geeks has a similar Foxconn card reader (Gateway OEM) available but they are used system pulls and the price is the same as the new one, so I'm not going to link to it (for now).

Hewlett Packard Internal 7-in-1 Card Reader (USB1.1) Dark Grey - $8.28 (plus shipping and tax, where applicable)

From Westoutlet.com:

16-IN-1 Internal USB2.0 Card Reader with USB Port (black) - $12.00

Goto Card Readers > 16IN1 INTERNAL RARD READER/WRITER BLACK (I know, card is spelled "rard"). Westoutlet uses a session cookie, so linking directly to the product will expire.

Westoutlet doesn't have a pic for this item, but the manufacturer is Sabrent, model SBT-CR16B. You can see a pic at Sabrent's website. Unfortunately, Sabrent's photo isn't that great. I found a better photo of the same card reader marketed under a different brand (Eurocom) in Dealsonic's catalog:

Card Reader Photo

Dealsonic's price is higher. I bought several of these and they work great. USB controller chip made by Alcor Micro. The internal USB cable is standard 2x5 (1x10) configuration that connects to motherboard USB header with pin #9 designated as "key" (no connect).

EDIT: Sabrent has fixed their card reader links after I contacted the webmaster. The photo of the black version is still crappy, but you get an idea of what the card reader looks like from the photo of the beige/white version. At least the full specs are there now:

Sabrent SBT-CR16W

Sabrent SBT-CR16B

Added Compaq 16x DVD-ROM.

I'd take the combo. I'm pretty sure the AOpen has a white or beige interchangable faceplates.

Good post. I just bought a Thermaltake black case from Newegg last night and am looking for similar items, since I don't have any components that will go with it.

Those card readers rock, if you have a use for that kind of thing. The last ones I ordered came with beige, black, and silver face plates included in the box. YMMV.

I ordered some black lite-on combo retail drives for $28 at buy.com. Email coupons can make it better. OEM and other colors available.

Nice list. I've spray painted old drives silver or black with vinyl dye and they look good. It's too much a hassle for new ones and sometimes the cost for black is higher than I'd like, tho it is cost effective for silver. Too used to the old FAR drives. Agree the reader with the spare parts is nice.

Received my optical drives today from Surplus Computer. The LG CD-RW drives are Hitachi-LG model GCE-8481B with production date of JAN2003. All the drives came with firmware 102 but there is an update to 105 from LG.

So far, no complaints; more quiet than average, supports Mt. Rainier and C2 errors. CDSpeed 2000 reports an average write speed of 37x (CAV), topping-out @ 48x, which surprised me given how quiet this drive is. I think its quieter than a couple 40x drives I've had. Quality score on Advanced Error Test was 100% and DAE quality was a perfect 10 with Accurate Stream.

My only complaint is that I ordered two of the LG 48x CD-RW drives and two of the Samsung 48x CD-RW + CD-ROM bundles. I received six drives, but they were all Hitachi-LG drives, none were Samsung. Not a big deal, I suppose, the Samsung had the same specs as the LG (and may have been an inferior drive).

BTW, Sabrent has fixed their card reader links after I contacted the webmaster. The photo of the black version is still crappy, but you get an idea of what the card reader looks like from the photo of the beige/white version. At least the full specs are there now:

Awesome thread!

Wish I would have know about the black floppy drives, when I was interested in floppy drives.
