Cheap bicycle upgrades

As some of you may know, I got into a bad bike accident. My wounds are healing thanks to Johnson & Johnson emergency adhesives, and I just got my bike back from the shop. I never even noticed after the accident, but the only major damage was that my saddle was bent sideways!

While I was there I asked them to put on some Specialized Crossroads EX's which were $55cdn for the pair. They look pretty sweet and the ride really nice. I'm looking forward to give em a good test on my commute tomorrow. I got them filled to 60psi which should be perfect for street riding.

As I was going to pay for my repair and upgrade they had a clearance on Specialized "Body Geometry" Comp saddles. So I picked up one of those for $30cdn 🙂. I got that on and adjusted it according to Brutskend's advice in my previous thread. When I dropped off the bike I also picked up some Activa Performance XC gloves for $15. For $100cdn I think I've improved my ride ten fold! I think I might take the 19km detour on the way home tomorrow.

Good for you. IMHO the body geometry saddle $ucks a$$ compared to a Selle Italia Flite. But that's just me.

Yeah, but I'm coming from the stock saddle 🙂

Agreed!

here's a completely unrelated bike question:

at the end of my ride tonight my drivetrain blew up:

xt rear derailleur snapped
chain broke
replaceable derailleur hanger bent

luckily i was able to coast down a nice long hill to my car and it didn't happen while I was still miles away from pavement.

On a bike less than 3 months old, should I expect this to be covered under warranty? Can I take it to any authorized (haro) dealer and expect them to fix it? I was hoping to go up to the local ski resort this weekend for some downhill, but I don't know how long it will take for the derailleur hanger to get fixed. 🙁

Anyone with any knowledge of such things?

Brutuskend, that sounds like a good upgrade. I look forward to telling people I got new nipples 😉. That saddle you linked to is 105g lighter than mine! The major selling point of my saddle was the following Medically proven in clinical studies to alleviate saddle-related numbness and impotence. Honestly, I did feel numb down there after being on the bike for over an hour. Haven't had a chance to test the impotence factor, but I might be able to test that now 😉.

FrustratedUser, stop being a snob. 😛 😉

LOL

<--- appears to be more of a poser.

Sounds like you sucked your chain into the rear spokes, or you may have had a stiff link that caused your chain to wreck your dérailleur. You may also have sucked a stick into the dérailleur. If the bike is that new, I would think the dealer would repair it for you. (it MAY have been caused by a faulty /shabby set-up on their part!)

I would try and press THAT point if I were you. I work in a bike shop, and if that happened to a bike that left OUR shop that soon in it's life, I would make it right. Hopefully your shop will too!

/me kicks thread hijackers in the gut 😛

I only went for a 5 min ride with my new saddle and I notice a huge difference. I would say $30cdn is pretty darn cheap. I believe Specialized also has a similar saddle (Comfort vs. Comp), which is much cheaper.

Check the other saddles listed in the link about my new saddle.
They have some nice, inexpensive saddles on there!

Search for "saddle" and author "Brutuskend" didn't yield the result of that thread 🙁

Well there are probably a bunch out there.. which one to you recommend? Maybe for less than $50 but the cheaper the better 😀

Plus not everyone's ass fits a flite. I have one on my mountain bike (since you're out of the saddle more, the smaller size is nice) but I have a Turbomatic 4 on my road bike. The extra cush is nice for those 4-hour rides. 😉

The one thing about saddles is that there isnt a "perfect seat" for everyone. It all depends on YOUR ass. Everyone used to sear up and down about those Selle Flites... then I got one for $70 or whatever they were at the time... and it sucked (for my butt). Took some trial and error but I found the one that fit my crack just right 🙂

I was just about to say the same thing. This is a highly personal matter, and everyone has a different preference.

I think it's interesting how the pros, who spend hours and hours in the saddle, have never really embraced the Flite or other featherweight saddles, because comfort is more critical to performance than a bit of weight.

I have ridden Flites more or less exclusively since 1993 or so, and never experienced pain or numbness, but I have never routinely ridden more than, say, 60-70 miles at once. I must say, though, that I am really enjoying the Brooks B-17 Champion Special put on my Woodrup - that thing is becoming really, really comfy as I break it in, and it was actually fine when brand new - the shape is really nice.

Well... I finally got a decent ride with all my new gear. The route was 19.3km in the city (busy areas). Overall, the bike felt faster. This could also be the result of me being extremely eager to be biking again (and well rested). I need to give these tires so time so I can build confidence taking corners a bit faster with them. I had no issues with the twig'n'berries (hour long ride). There were moments where my bum got a bit numb, but that didn't last long.

Here's another thing I noticed. This happened before on the same ride at the same moment. There's a 3km stretch that is completely flat with the wind at your back. I'm 1 or 2 gears below the highest I can go. I get into this rythym and maintain 36-38km/hr. Then all of the sudden my calves cramp up. I can relieve the cramps by trying to point my toes towards my leg.... if I point my toes down as if I am tippy toeing, I get that cramping feeling. Am I pedaling with poor technique?
