Instead of beating the shit outta or outright breaking my car, I want to get a really cheap beater to park up at my inlaws in BFE, Wyoming, to use on the various dirt roads, trails and non-roads between their house and cabin, camping spots, fishing spots, etc... (normal roads and highways too).
Stopped at a tiny gas stop off I-80 this weekend and saw a '70 International Scout that was incredibly ugly, well rusted in some areas, missing the passenger seat, had shot pellet holes all over the tailgate (was converted to a truck...of sorts), etc.... But it started, ran, 4x4 worked and was only $500. And had a plow attached, which also worked. My understanding is that International parts are few and far between, and expensive...so that'll probably defeat the purpose.
My BIL is also checking out a '69 Bronco we spotted, which looked to be in much better condition, at least on the exterior. If it's not a total POS mechanically, hopefully they'll go for $500 as well.
Anyway, given the above examples and prices, would any of the AT garage folk have suggestions? For the whole project, I'd like to stay under $1300 for sale and repairs....though it always has the possibility of becoming a real hobby/project for me and my BIL.
Edit:
So obviously there're too many variables to say what would stay within my budget, so I think I'm more asking what would you look for in a beater for this purpose and budget? Or what would you try to avoid?
