Cheap Athlon 64 X2

The cheapest one seems to be the 3800+. It costs much less than the next, the 4200+.

But is there any difference, besides price and clock frequency? Do they have the same core, or is 3800+ and older version? It seems they have different L1 and L2 cache sizes and different operating temperatures etc.

Of course, I would like to just buy the 3800+ because it is cheaper, but I don't want to buy an old version that gets hotter, is less overclockable etc.

Which one should I buy?

And can you recommend a motherboard with that? 🙂

They are both the same core, and have the same amount of cache. The only differance is that the stock speed of the 3800 is 2ghz, and the 4200 is 2.2ghz. The 4200 also comes with a better stock heatsink. They both have about the same OC potential. I have the 4200+ with a DFI lanparty Ultra-D, and it's at 2.618ghz 1.475v with the stock AMD cooler, 51c under max load.

Save your money and go with the 3800+

2.6ghz @ 1.47v

2.7 @ 1.56v

2.8ghz @ 1.61 ( not worth the extra volts! )

But I will run this chip all day long @ 1.56v!

Yeah, the 3800's seem to be about as overclockable as the 4200's. Go with the 3800 and a Dfi ultra-d.
