Cheap alcohol vs. top shelf alcohol - Whats your favorite brands?

What's the difference in your opinion between cheap liquor and top shelf alcohol? Taste, smoother buzz, etc..? What makes the difference in top shelf alcohol? Is it aging, filtration or some other method?

Also what's your favorite brand of alcohol?

You can't compare the 2, and the reasons why will vary by spirit. It comes down to time, and quality. Cheap out on ingredients, speed up the distillation, speed up the aging, take the wrong cut of spirit... Like almost everything in life, you can do it right, or you can do it cheap.

Scotch ftw.

Filtration in Vodka, Gin, rum makes it cost more.

Aging in years cost more for Tequila, Bourbon/Scotch/Whiskey.

Grain type and percentage also effects price - 100% agave over 51% agave for tequilas and corn versus rye/barley for whiskey.

Evan Williams is $16 for handle and Jack Daniels is $34. Is it worth the premium?

Many top-shelfs are due to marketing not due to better flavor, higher alochol %, or rarity.

I love a good rye on the rocks or a nice bourbon & diet coke.

Cheap Portuguese macieira FTW.

Scotch is what you end up with if you have a morose alcoholic people who like to fight, stuck on the arse end of a cold rainy island for millennia.

For scotch, I like Famous Grouse for a blend, and Dalmore 12 for a single.

Irish whiskey is Black Bush, or Red Breast, Get Tullamore Dew for a very drinkable cheap Irish.

Tequila I like 1800 anejo. Tres Generaciones is good also.

I don't really do white spirits. I like Bombay Sapphire for the rare gin I get, but it seems to generate some hate. It tastes alright to me, but I'm not really into gin.

Oh, and for bourbon, Old Forrester is easily the best bang/buck bourbon imo.

Scotch. Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban on the higher end (I find quickly diminishing returns above $60 a bottle), Scoresby in a jug on the lower end, since you asked for both. Scoresby is better than its pricetag suggests, which is to say it's drinkable, but it's nothing special.

Not even close to being worth the premium. Of course in that particular match-up Evan Williams is an exceptionally good inexpensive bourbon and JD is overpriced based on the name. And you can't get Evan for $16 any more unless you live somewhere that doesn't tax booze.

That article is wonderful, thanks for the link.

That article is wonderful, thanks for the link. I now have the urge to go out and buy & drink the cheapest bottle of vodka I can find.

1) If you need to use a mixer, then you are drinking shit alcohol. Keep the soda for the kids. If it has an umbrella in it or tastes like fruit give it to the wife.

2) Cheap alcohol is for drunks. If you need to buy cheap alcohol you should go to AA rather than the liquor store.

3) Drink scotch. No ice, no soda. A glass, some scotch and a splash of hot water in the winter or cold water in the summer.

People who only drink Scotch have no imagination.

/stereotype

Just this morning I was musing about the possible outcome of posting unit prices for booze right on the store shelves. Units being ounces alcohol content per dollar. So a pint bottle of 80 proof rot gut at $10 would be 64 cents/once alcohol and a pint of 100 proof good stuff at $18 would be 80 cents/once alcohol. If alcohol prices were marked in this fashion would if shift buyer habits? Would folks looking for maximum bang for the buck shift brands or types of booze?

Took the words right out my mouth.

I'd ignore it. I don't drink to get drunk. I drink for flavor.

Might I suggest a fruit juice or ginger beer? Alcohol tastes like shit.

Ginger beer rocks, especially a brewed version from Australia whose name escapes me atm. I'm not a big fan of fruit juices. Most are too sweet.

That said, they aren't a substitute for a good whisky. That's like suggesting asparagus as a replacement for bacon cheeseburgers. Both are great, but not a substitute for each other.
