Sony, Toshiba, Panasonic & maybe Samsung all make decent units... I'd say read some online reviews of specific units as well because although most HDTV's have a great picture when watching HD, most of the time you'll be watching standard TV resolution & in that area they vary widely... when I bought mine in early 2005 the Sony had the best standard pic of the units I looked at & was beautiful in HD. (although I went with a 34 inch model)

Also make sure the unit you choose has at least one HDMI & preferrably more.

Edit: This one looks nice:

I'm also in the market for a similar sized TV (27-37 inches), but I don't want to pay big bucks for LCD TVs. I was thinking along the lines of a used WEGA, but was wondering if there were any similar alternatives out there?

*Edit*
It will just be for movies and the Wii.

What do you mean by blooming? I don't mean to sound, well I don't know what word I'm looking for, but Oblivion on the 360 has HDR. Could that have been what was causing it?

Or maybe you mean banding?

Although you can't get it anymore, I snagged a Sanyo 30" widescreen from Wal-Mart. Its an awesome TV. I believe it has 800 lines of vertical resolution (yeah, I know, no full 1920x1080, but its still good for a CRT) which allows it do show all of 720p content (which it can accept, something that some of the other brands can't do or will just convert to 540p), and just looks phenomenal. Oddly enough, I don't get eye fatigue on it like I do with CRT Monitors. Has a built in ATSC tuner (Hi-Def content looks fantastic on it), and even SD signals look very good. Mine has a some geometry issues, but I'm very happy with it. Xbox 360 looks just plain awesome on it. I currently have an Infocus 4805 projector, and even though it puts out a very nice image, I decided that I'm going to get rid of it as the picture quality on the TV is just noticably better. Colors are nicer, blacks are really black, and just has a more pleasing image.

I believe they sell a 28" version, but I haven't heard much about it.

At that price if you want HD its going to have to be either used or refurbished... too bad about the problems with the Toshiba, those are nice TV's when they work well.

I'm not a fan of the Toshibas. Their picture quality is horrible compared to Panasonics and Sonys, and they'javascript:link('FTVAR_MESSAGETEXTFRM');
Insert http linkve got some of the ugliest, cheapest looking cabinets.

For picture quality, the Sony HD sets are the top of the line - the 960 followed by the 420. However, with the Sony's you'll end up paying $1500-ish - not worth it, IMO.

I purchased a Panasonic T(tau) series 32" 4:3 HD, and love it. XBOX360 over components looks great, as well as DVDs in 480p and upconverted to 1080i via HDMI. This set is probably 2nd place to the Sonys in picture quality, and is much more affordable - can be found at Fry's for around $650. My buddy got the same model in a 30" 16x9 size, and it also looks great - but his was about $50 cheaper @ Circuit City.

Some of the Sanyo HD sets for sale at Walmart didn't look too bad in my limited viewings. These sets are usually around $300-$550, so you may find a good deal there.

The AVS Forums have a lot of info and user opinions about HD sets too. Not alot of budget-conscious buyers there, though.

I would try to find a Sony or Panasonic if you can , or if that fails Samsung would be my next choice. Unfortunately CRTs are becoming extinct.. Im just glad I bought my 34" Sony XBR960 a few months ago , Sony pulled the plug on it right afterwards.(and many other models)

Toshiba used to make excellent tv's but ever since they started outsourcing there picture tubes from Orion (about 2 years ago) picture quality and reliability went to hell. So basically any new Toshiba CRT you buy isnt even made by Toshiba anymore.

Panasonic stopped making CRTs altogether this year.

Sony only has a few CRT HDTV models left in production but any of those will better than all other current CRT HDTVS.

Samsung makes a decent 30" "Slimfit" model although it gets a lot of complaints about Geometry issues, supposedly they've improved on it with the latest batches.

I would steer clear of other brands such as Insignia / Sanyo / Prima.

There's also this list of HDTV ratings from Consumer Reports (March 2006): Link
