That time again - time to replace an old machine with a new one. My mom's laptop is failing in various ways that I can't fix. The webcam died, only the left speaker works, she's using a universal laptop charger and the CPU fan is starting to fail and I can't seem to find one to replace it with.
I was looking at spending about $400 (before taxes, prefer locally-available or ship-to-store) and getting her a 17" display, modern quad core CPU, at least a 500gb drive and 4gb of ram (with one slot open for an upgrade). Optical drive not required.
She mostly does Facebook, Youtube, Browsing, casual games, and the most stressful 3D game would be The Sims 3. She does enjoy FPS, so if it could run newish games at low settings, that would be acceptable as well.
I was looking at two machines at Best Buy, both are available at local stores, and both are identical HP laptops, save two things: One has an i3-4000m with Intel HD 4600 graphics and the second is the AMD A8-5550m with Radeon 8550G graphics.
Am I correct in thinking that the Intel laptop would have a stronger CPU while the AMD one will have stronger graphics performance?
On a side note, the screen size is non-negotiable.
Anybody else have recommendations in this budget? New laptops only please, no used ones.
