Chavez escalates claims that U.S. using relief effort to invade Haiti

"The empire," said Mr. Chavez using his favorite epithet for the United States, "is taking Haiti over the bodies and tears of its people."

"They started with the airport," he said, referring to Port-au-Prince's single runway airfield, which U.S. forces have operated since last week, assisting hundreds of aid planes in landing.

"If you want to go inside the destroyed presidential palace, you'll find US Marines standing in your way," Chavez added.

On Tuesday, U.S.military helicopters landed at Haiti's presidential palace, which was largely destroyed in the 7.0 quake that struck on Jan. 12.

The United States on Wednesday said it would send 4,000 more troops to help quake-devastated Haiti, bringing the total number of US military either on the ground or on offshore ships to 15,000 in coming days.

"They brazenly occupied Haiti without consulting the UN or the OAS (Organization of American States)," said Mr. Chavez, who on Sunday made similar accusations about the U.S. relief effort in Haiti.

Meanwhile, Bolivian President Evo Morales, one of Mr. Chavez's closest allies in the region, said Wednesday he would request an emergency UN meeting "to repudiate and reject this military occupation of the United States in Haiti."

Of course, the U.S. did not just seize upon a random chance opportunity - they created this situation:

Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez Wednesday accused the United States of causing the destruction in Haiti by testing a 'tectonic weapon' to induce the catastrophic earthquake that hit the country last week.

President Chavez said the US was "playing God" by testing devices capable of creating eco-type catastrophes, the Spanish newspaper ABC quoted him as saying.

Let's take a look at this jewel in the Caribbean the U.S. has just snatched up:

CIA Factbook: Haiti

Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere with 80% of the population living under the poverty line and 54% in abject poverty. Two-thirds of all Haitians depend on the agricultural sector, mainly small-scale subsistence farming, and remain vulnerable to damage from frequent natural disasters, exacerbated by the country's widespread deforestation.

...

The apparel sector accounts for two-thirds of Haitian exports and nearly one-tenth of GDP. Remittances are the primary source of foreign exchange, equaling nearly a quarter of GDP and more than twice the earnings from exports. Haiti suffers from high inflation, a lack of investment because of insecurity and limited infrastructure, and a severe trade deficit.

Good work guys. What's the next addition to the empire going to be? Swaziland? IS NOTHING SACRED?

No wonder the Berlin Wall fell. Seems dictators snap under the pressure of keeping the masses under their thumb.

I wonder if Venezuela or Bolivia even sent any help to Haiti. The U.S. is probably spending a couple million dollars a day on their effort. Obama should go on the air and tell Chavez to put up or shut up.

He's right, but it wasn't a tectonic weapon. It was Kirstie Alley going for a walk in the Florida Keys.

I don't usually comment on Hugo Chavez but I can see this guy dying in the next 3-5 years. He's like a talkative bully. Venezuela has always been an American ally and I think the people of that country will do the right thing after 11 nightmarish years.

Interestingly enough many Haitians the news has interviewed actually want the US to take over the country and make it US territory.

Given the bullshit international jockeying to be seen as leading the relief effort from a number of other countries I'd support the USAF closing the airport to all but military traffic and transshipping everything through Homestead AFB (which has ample fuel and ramp/apron space since it was a bomber base). Things would go a lot faster if everything didn't have to be hand unloaded from a wide mix of civilian aircraft on site.

Hugo can go pound sand as far as I'm concerned.

Wrong hemisphere and/or skin color?

Wrong Hemisphere? Senegal and South Africa have already donated money and food

Skin Color? Almost all European countries and China have donated cash and food.

There's another reason, but it's politically incorrect to state it on this forum. I'll give you a clue: What do Iran, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, UAE, Kuwait and Pakistan have in common?

Shock me, shock me.

Chavez is a lunatic with a hard-on against the US and will use any situation to blame the US to rally his fanatical supporters and ignore the continuing domestic problems Venezuela faces.

Really, what use could we possibly have for that territory?

Must be something good if Chavez is getting involved.

That's the point though, we've got all these extremist to deal with in the world and nothing to fight them with because their supporters believe everything they spew ad nausea. It kind of makes you pine for the good ole days when your enemies could be blown up.

This was just a test of our new earthquake weapon. Next we will move up the food chain and invade Belize.
