Chavez offers cheap gas to poor in U.S.

"We want to sell gasoline and heating fuel directly to poor communities in the United States," the populist leader told reporters at the end of a visit to Communist-run Cuba.

Chavez did not say how Venezuela would go about providing gasoline to poor communities. Venezuelan state oil company PDVSA owns Citgo, which has 14,000 gas stations in the United States.

The offer may sound attractive to Americans feeling pinched by soaring prices at the pump but not to the U.S. government, which sees Chavez as a left-wing troublemaker in Latin America.

Gasoline is cheaper than mineral water in oil-producing Venezuela, where consumers can fill their tanks for less than $2. Average gas prices have risen to $2.61 a gallon in the United States, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Chavez said Venezuela could supply gasoline to Americans at half the price they now pay if intermediaries who "speculated ... and exploited consumers" were cut out.

Venezuela supplies Cuba with generously financed oil and plans to help Caribbean nations foot their oil bills.

Chavez, in Cuba to attend the graduation of Cuban-trained doctors from 28 countries, was seen off at the airport by Cuban President Fidel Castro. Washington has accused the two leaders of being a destabilizing influence in South America.

Chavez and Castro offered to give poor Americans free health care and train doctors free of charge.

If I did have a car I would go fill up on citgo today.

Chavez is going for the low blows on the neocons now

"Gasoline is cheaper than mineral water in oil-producing Venezuela..."

I think our SUV makers need to penetrate those untapped markets. Holy cow.

[edit]PS...I agree with this: "speculated ... and exploited consumers" to a point. There is no way my corner gas station should raise the price of the gas they purchased last week $.25 in one day on speculation that prices (and thus expenses) will continue to increase...feel so violated ;)

Well Castro has proved his mettle unlike 'Compassionate' Conservatives. The health care and educational facilities in Cuba are far better than any other Latin American nation. He obviously cares for the poor.

Chavez is empowering natives in Venezuela for the first time in its post Colombus/Conquistador history.

I wouldn't believe everything they are saying but how will we ever know - its illegal to go to Cuba and Venezuela is enroute to getting major sanctions slapped on them.

For real??? Someone should have shown me this good health care before I left Cienfuegos.I always hear about this good health care system in Cuba but never saw it in action and I have a long medical history.Funny part is even the guajiro's have no luck with Castro someone rats on them and they are kicked out and exchanged.Even those poor people get screwed under the man who was suppose to help them.

Living in Cuba is horrible..Cubans have to live poor under the notion of keeping the revolution alive.Don't let me get started on being stripped of any personal and politically opinions. Not to mention Castro's creation of "the new man" which is basically people who don't look you in the eye and rat you out for a quick buck.

Health care in Cuba is modelled after the old Soviet system.

The best for the leders, crumbs for the poeple.

Show off the facilities for the leaders to the press and sweep the trash off the streets.

Castro learned from the Soviets, Chavez is learning from Castro.

Many times the bleeding hearts will see what they want to becuase they do not want to see anything else.

...I didn't see Clinton make any changes either. Isn't Bush the one that allowed certain imports to Cuba to be allowed?

From my experience the words of Cuban exiles and immigrants don't really hold all that much weight.

Yep, his healthcare is so good that doctors would rather give up their jobs and go work as towel boys at the local touist resort because it pays more.
