chatzilla, and add-ons in general not working

chatzilla stopped workiing for some reason

so I uninstalled it, and went to reinstall it

however, I got an "unexpected installation error"

I tried another add-on, then another
both gave the same message

I reinstalled firefox, to no avail

I turned off and then uninstalled my anti-virus (Bit Defender)

none of that worked

can anyone help me?
