I'm moving into the dorms soon and I was wondering if there is some software out there that allows you to have semi decent chat using webcams on both ends. I may set it up at home and in my room or else in a friends dorm so we can talk back and forth. Even if it's a free website that you can do it on and you can only allow certain people to view the camera, that'd be ok too.
Thanks!

I could be stating the obvious (or maybe you are looking for an alternative to these) but what about either Netmeeting or MSN Messenger 5.0 or later (assuming both PC's running WinXP)

Thanks for the replies and I realize yahoo has a chat thing but I want something I have a little more control over. IIRC, Apex had something set up like this in Holand. I'm gonna see if it was him and send him a pm.

windows media encoder

free, works from your own machine, transmits on a port of your choosing, only those that you send your IP & port to will know they can connect, monitoring of whos IPs are connected in main window, takes a liittle rtfm to get the best out of it setup wise, users can connect with common sw like WMP/Real etc etc

or

paltalk

easy to instal, lockable/passwordable rooms, free for stuttery updates (not sure what rate, seemed like it was 1 frame every 5 secs), inexpensive membership to enable straming media (no stutters), text also provided, no bars on non members (free ppl can join)
