gf just got a real job, so opened a bank account. just deposited her first paycheck into the account. the check is drawn on HSBC. which is located in chase tower here in houston. so chase says they're going to put a hold on the check for a week because her account doesn't have any money in it. hello, it was just opened! meanwhile, she has to pay rent for her new place tomorrow.

so, if she can get the check back from chase, can she go to HSBC and demand cash?

When I was out of work for a few months then finally got a job and got paid for the first time, Chase held my check for a week as well since there was nothing in my account for so long. Not sure if all banks are similar, or if this is a Chase only thing. When I called she said it was for security reasons. No biggie, they said I can still write checks, I'll get a fee for going negative, but they'll cover them. They said to just call after the fees appear and they would reverse them, but there was no way to block the fees. They had to hit my account, then I called, and they were removed.
